To start off, i am 15 years old and i have been in the lawn maintenance business for approximately 3 years. I have a 1983 Ford Ranger in which i use for both my lawn maintenance and my personal vehicle. Many people who i have talked to say they are more likely to call someone with permanate letters on the side of their vehicles than someone with a magnetic sign. Do you have any feedback on what i shall do about lettering my vehicle or should i just leave it plain like it is now???
Pics of other peoples lettering setup would be nice.

I personally think it does not matter. Yeah lettering is nice but not always needed. Is your truck commercial? Also this is probably not the place for this thread.......

Lettering is not necessry. I used to have it on my trucks but I took it off. I never got a single call from it. I personally think a nice clean truck with no lettering looks better than a rolling billboard. Save your money and spend it on something else.

there are plenty of successful LCO's that do not have their trucks or trailers lettered at all

I'm thinking about doing something simple on my back window, I also need to get some new magnets.

I think thats probably the worst advice I've heard.
I'd get some nice lettering made up, just put the name and phone number. I wish I was on my other computer or I'd show you what a few of my trucks look like with the different ways to do lettering. My one ton is all lettered up while my personal truck just has small lettering in the extended cab windows. Its all preference. I personally like lettering over doing magnetic signs.

I'm in the same boat as you. I don't want everything I do as a teen to be assosciated with my biz when I'm not wotking. I put 3 bg signs on my trailer that way when I'm finished work I can disconnect.

thanks guys for all the replies! i think i am going to get 2 signs made up for the sides of the trailer, but considering i dont have a rear ramp, i am kinda screwed. the signs may take a while, considering i dont have the extra money to spend on them and there are other things to be done, but it'll happen sometime.
pictures of the setups would still be nice though.
mike you are right up my alley! i probably live about 30 minutes away from hendersonville.

don't spend your money on lettering. spend it on liability insurance.

well since everyone has mixed opinions, i think i'm gonna just wait until i actually have the extra money. that could be weeks or months or maybe even a year...i'm pretty tied down with my 17 accounts, and with the bermuda season winding down, money will become more scarce. please let me know what your input is...

Well I'm not sure about where you guys are located, but here there is a legal side to it. DOT requires any commercial vehicle to have a company name on it otherwise you can receive a ticket and its not cheap.

I'd spend the hundred bucks on some lettering, it WILL get you work. People driving by and nieghbors will call. It will pay for itself in no time.

Thats funny because I have NEVER gotten a single call off my truck lettering. I have it my F-150 and used to have it on my 250. I'm taking it off the 150 this week, it does nothing. Trailer signs are good because you still have your truck free of your company name when your not working.

Yeah your right, last winter I was driving down the highway and I had just taken off my magnet signs so that I could wash my truck and I was pulled over by a state cop and I got a $150 fine. Down here in Evansville IN, if you are a LCO you are required to have a sign on your truck plus a DOT #. So after everything I was set back roughly $300 for the ticket, gettin my truck inspected, physical, etc. So if I were you I would check your local laws and or ordinances and see if they require you to get a DOT #. And if I were you I would get your truck lettered verse magnets, as a matter of fact I am getting my truck vinyl lettered tomorrow.
I have been in the business for 10 years and for the first 6 years of my business I had no signs on my truck and when I got my magnets 4 years ago I got more business right away just from my magnets. But I am tired of taking my magnets off to wash them every so often plus getting it lettered looks more professional.

I don't have my truck lettered and I don't seem to be hurting for business.
My take on lettering is this: its a great way to advertise, but its also a bad way to advertise, especially if its on your personal vehicle. Think about it, you honk at someone or flip them off in traffic, fine. The idiot in the blue ford flipped someone off. If you're lettered, John Doe's Landscaping just flipped you off. You're really putting a lot out there beyond what you think when you letter your truck, especially with you phone number.
