I am new to this forum and just starting to get into commercial mowing.

I own another service company and have an opportunity to bid on (4) very large commercial cutting jobs. They are all apartment communities.

The largest being approx. 60 acres.

I know what I need to charge for the cutting but all of the other items such as fall clean-up, spring clean-up and especially the mulching. I have no clue as to the going rate.

There are over 250 trees and every unit has a mulch bed outside there door.

How do you guys charge for mulching?

I am a small landscaper in Northern VA. As a general rule of thumb, I figure on at least $10 per yard of mulch for labor, plus the cost of mulch of course. Depending on the terrain and how close I can get the mulch dumped, I will add on more for difficult areas. On average, I can move about 3 yards of mulch per hour per man, this is with wheel barrows and shoveling it in with pitch forks. I don't have much equipment or a big truck, so I'm limited in some areas. I know that I'm probably under charging, but I try to make myself at least 20 per hour. Just my 2 cents, maybe I'm way off.

Would you charge per tree for the mulching?

He is way off! I get $75yd delivered and installed for mulch. Since you have a large job you can discount it a bit. As far as the leaves go, you need to break it down in areas and go from there. Do you need to remove the leaves?

you dont charge per tree. You charge per yd deliered and installed. You need to figure out how many yds you need.

So if i had a 25yd job then the bill will be :

25 x 75 = $1875.00 + Tax

Thanks guys for the info. Very helpful.

What is the average cost of a yard of mulch?

I live in the North East.

How many trees can you cover with 1 yard of mulch?

I am assuming that most trees have a 5 foot circumference.

search online for the formula to figure it out. Probably around 1/2-3/4yd. Here in CT as a contractor i get mine for $18yd. However most retailers are around $22 - $25yd for dark double ground pine mulch. (most popular around here)

$75? are you insane? Lets just say you do 10 yards and purchase it for $25 a yard.... So you are then making $50 a yard..times 10, $500!!!! For maybe 4 hours work for one person. I think you're way off or you are really ripping people off.

I get $70 a yd here. That covers mulch, del., labor. For a job that big invest in a measuring wheel. Measure out all your beds. New approx. 3" mulch existing approx. 2" thick. For the amount of mulch you could back your price off some and still make good money. Do you have to clean out the beds or are you top dressing the same color and kind? If you have to clean out and dress beds that is more work. You need to then figure out man hrs X your labor rate = price for just cleaning up the beds.

We get $100.00 out here with light weed pulling and edging. It all depends on where you do buisness at I guess. :)

The place that I go through for my mulch has delivery already in the price, it doesn't change if you pick it up or not. If I get mulch it is around $20/yd delivered and chips are $30/yard delivered. I can usually get $50-$60 yard installed depending on the account.

And the easiest way to do the leaf clean-up price is to break it down the account into smaller sections and price each one. It may be easier for you to estimate "smaller" sections and then just add them all together rather than just estimating the property as a whole.

So if you have a tree with a 5 foot diameter @ 3 inches of mulch.
How many trees can you do with 1 yard?

I searched for the formula but didn't see it.

Harleysville, did'nt mean to be harsh on my first reply, just seems a little high to me. Here is a link to a cylinder calculator: http://www.calculatoredge.com/enggcalc/volume.html#sphere

The last two jobs I did were 12 yards for $300 + mulch fees and 80 yards for $1200 + mulch. So I guess I'm between $15 and $25 per yard on labor. I out bid a small nursery and landscape biz on one that was 30 yards, The bid $1200 and I bid $900, this is mulch, labor, and some cleanup. Maybe I'm a little off, or need to move to the areas you guys are in!

$1200 labor for 80 yds?? You have help, you made minimum wage. I'm very cheap where I'm at and I would charge at least $2800 on 80 yds for labor mulch would be extra.

For me when I out down mulch mulch cost for me to buy $35/yard. I add $15 to every yard so for mulch its $50 a yard and then depending on if I need to edge and weed and also how difficult it might be to install the mulch is how I get the rest of my price. So if the customer needs 3 yards it would be
- 3 yards-$150
- plus my labor that I would set depending on the job.

I charge $75/yd installed, and I pay about $30 per yard. Weeding and and edging is extra. It seems to be the going rate around here.

If you are bidding on a large commercial job. (The one I am bidding on has about 250 trees and every door way"245 door ways" has a mulch bed)
do you give them an exact amount or an estimate based on the per yard installed price?

You will need to bid the job as a total amount. A cu/yd of mulch will cover between 100 and 200 sq/ft. Measure the area at each doorway. Determine the amount of mulch required per doorway. Multiply by 245. Remember, ecomonies of scale will kick in, and your competition may be bidding pretty aggressively for a large deal. Regardless, I would word it like this:

"Supply and install bark mulch around 245 entrance doors--$6,500.00"

(or whatever your price turns out to be.)
