I'm interested in any tips on old Bunton mowers. I have a 52" walk behind single speed. Any good maintenance tips, things to look out for, ways to make it go faster, is it junk?
Thanks for any info.

you can change the pully on the small transmission underneath to make it go faster. I think a smaller one will speed it up. You will have to change belt size if you make to big of a change. Isnt your bunton variable speed drive? It should have a variable speed pully on the engine.

First of all,it's not single speed, it just needs service.
They have a variable speed, spring-loaded pulley on the bottom of the engine. It has a "gear" shifter on the left of the handle system.
Is it junk?
Yes and no.
No, because Buntons are quality. They were basically the first/formost commercial walk-behind mower. Their design is the one every one else copied since the late 1950's.
They were built better than their "copiers" and cost more, too.
The company was bought/sold a few times and is now owned by Textron (Bobcat, Jacobson, Ryan, etc.,etc.)
Basically Bunton never changed and that's why they died off.
They were King in 1980. They just adapted too slowly to the demands of the commercial cutter.
Yes, (it is junk) because you'll probably put more $ in time and parts (and chasing parts) than you would make by mowing with a new, trouble-free, productive mower.
~Might be a good off-season project.
