View Full Version : Teenagers' Equipment

Tyler's Lawn Maintenance

Hopefully this thread will turn out better than my last. I want to see the teens' lawn equipment. Mine is shown below. I use this setup for the residential portion of my business in my grandpa's neighborhood. I strap the weedeater to the wooden portion of trailer, strap the mower and blower in the bed, and i also keep a small pail and digging tool in the bed. Let me know what you think and i would like some suggestions to improve this setup.

Everything I own is in my sig... just started out in august and i am a full time college student driving back home (200 miles) every weekend to do all the lawn care work. while im at college i am doing anything paperwork wise, and any internet advertising i can, and mostly wishing I was back home working on getting new clients. Im planing going full time next year as i have a younger brother who will be 17 next spring and he needs a job so it will be him by himself all weekin the evenings (he is still in high school) while I'm stuck down here, and then the both of us all weekend. tell me what you think about that plan... am i being realistic???

I'm 18, a freshman at the Univ of North Dakota. I know of two companies that are named *** Landscape Maintenance. Mine and a friend of mine whose an LCO who lives about 15 miles away down at home. And, I am not jealous of your name in any way.

Thank you. When you processed the papers they must've had to look twice to make sure that really was the name. My favorite part is that it's so grammatically incorrect that it's not even funny...wait, yes it is. First off, you never put the word 'me' first in a phrase such as that, and second you would put 'I' instead of 'me', and lastly, I've said this before, wtf is 'my diddy'?

I always thought it was a reference to Sean Combs, AKA: P-diddy, Sean " Puffy " Combs, and one other one but I can't remember.

He sucked anyways.

If you want to talk rap, go buy Snoop's first album with Dr. Dre. That's the good stuff.

I didnt mount anything to the side, because i use the trailer for dumping things, and if anything is mounted to the side, it could possibly obstruct loading it. And I am hopefully on the way to buying that 36" ex mark metro I posted in another thread. I am thinking about building a wooden cart, possibly 5x8, that i could use to transport that walk behind, a push mower, and mount my weed eaters and blowers on for transpord around my neighborhood.

i may make something like these trailers. Its most likely to be a 5x8 like the 1st picture, but a 3x6 like the bottom picture is still an option. These pictures are part of kits that are over $800, but i could probably make one for a fraction of that. Let me know what you think.

This week two of my classes have been canceled, one to have a conference with each student discussing a large paper that is due in the coming weeks and the other is to go to a wide range of seminars. This week has seemed like I have all the time in the world to do stuff. Normally I'm absolutely booked with classes and work until 4:30pm every day. Then I have homework to do. I really dont use a chainsaw alot, only when poking around with firewood at my house when my dad is with me. If I get small tree removals, I just go with 2 hatchets, a axe, mattix, small hand saw, and a shovel then have a truck come get it to dump it at my house. I'm not really allowed to use a chainsaw much, but I do when i get the chance, just to get experiance with it.

Right now I am booked every day with homework I just got home from school and have to cut today but usually I have lacrosse and homework. I will not be living on campus and will be commuting, its a short commute. Also I have a few friends in the schools that i am looking at and all of them are done every day by 11 A.M. You might not have that much time but my situation might be a little different.

Yeah they're done with classes at 11am, that doesn't include studying. To get an A in a class it's recommended you do 2 hours of studying for every hour you're in class. That's the method I have. Plus, your schedule will be different. If you have class at 10am on a day, the next class you choose may not be until 2pm or later, then you're stuck there until 3pm or whatever. I planned my schedule to be done as early as possible so I have a couple 8am and 9am classes, I'm done at noon on mwf and done at 145 on tues&thurs. Good luck with school. It's tough, I'm off to watch the twins hopefully win and then do a few hours of studying.

I'm 16. I will be replacing that Honda with a Toro Super Bagger for christmas and the Honda will be for mowing the home. It was $600 I think, I don't care for it though. I do like the folding handlebars.

That's the thing- I only mow 3 neighborhood lawns. Now that I have my license as of October, I will be getting a trailer. The lawns are not horribly small, but they can be tackled with a 21" mower just fine. It's a situation where large houses were built on small lots. I do mainly tree trimming and landscape maintenance, with some sprinkler repairs. I don't think the Honda mower will hold up to a lot of lawns, based on my experience with it so far. And I have looked into a nice walk behind but I am sticking with a small mower for right now.

Yeah, exactly. I usually "study" till midnight most nights and get up between 6 and 7. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately depending on how you look at, I live close to home, so I can be home in about 1/2 hour. Also, I was lucky to be able to stack my classes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Monday night. Which means I have until dinner time Monday, all day Wednesday, and all day Friday to either work, study, or procrastinate.

Weekends are where the fun is at in college!!!

Not where I go!:laugh::laugh: Everybody goes home because they're homesick little pansies. I have a responsibility to my customers, otherwise, I'd be at school. Too bad nobody else would be.:laugh:

I saw the costs and said hell no, it was $900 for the first year, $600 for the first semester with start up ($300) and then the regular fee of $300, and $300 for the 2nd semester. I really don't mind it. It's nice to be home (my mom is going through chemo so its alot of piece of mind). Once winter hits, if its not snowing at home on the weekends, ill be here in platteville. My college choices were here and Univ. of Minn, I loved the campus and I used to live in edina and have always loved the twin cities but the travel factor and sheer size of minn were deterents. I plan on making up on lost time this winter as far as the college experience goes lol. My drive is a little under 3 hours, and I kind of enjoy driving so its no big deal at all. plus I usually shuffle people I know back and forth every weekend so my gas $ is half of what it would be or even free in some instances. I plan on heading off to penn state after my 4 years here for their turfgrass program so hopefully by that point I will have either sold my accounts or get myself to the point of having a crew out daily. only time will tell.

Yes, Yes I know, that is only a very small part of the reason I am considering it. First, being a state college it is very affordable(I will have to pay my own way through college). Second, they do have business Administration programs which I am looking at. Third, it is a smaller college in a smaller town which also is a benefit for me. I would like to do a four year business program, that way I can still run my business when I get out of school, but it gives me other options in case I would ever want to get out of the green industry to pursue other ventures. I don't think I will for a while, but I like to keep my options open. Do you have any suggestions? I think I heard you are majoring in accounting, right? Yeah my major is accounting, don't have an accounting class yet. A good friend of mine from high school that goes here was just talking about how this is just like high school, we thought with college we'd get to finally take classes we want to take, but nope were in composition writing papers twice a damn week..ugh. Anyway, I'm in an intro to business class, I have yet to learn anything from it haha. I too am paying for this schooling, for this year I'm only paying around $1500/semester cash [check obviously] up front and the rest is loans. :dizzy: I'm in a ton of debt already and it sucks!!! I'd recommend coming here but it is a 5 hour drive from home, and I'm at least a half hour-45 min north of you. So if you were to commute home each weekend to work, that would be rough. If they have any landscape classes I'll take them. I'll actually check the catalog right now to see if they have any classes like that.

I plan on making a career out of this after college. But I started just becasue I liked landscaping and working for myself. Now I do it becasue I hope to make a career out of it.(Go big after college.) And also I will use the money to put me through college.

This also my plan. School is 1st priority for me right now tell i am able to focus on my business then i will make it my career.

i plan on pursuing it long term once i get a degree in buisness management and horiculture

I totally agree with all of these. I am working hard at High School right now. I definitely plan on pursuing a 4 year degree, a double major in Business, and Horticulture/turf grass management. I then plan on going for the Masters degree in Landscape Management/Landscape architecture. I may also do engineering. I love doing what I do now, however the money will hopefully pay for some of my college plans!

I'm with you on that!!!!

what a bad name!!!:dizzy:

Are you a rapper who cuts lawns on the side ?:cool2:

in reference to Me And My Diddy whatever the company is, my wife just read that company name, and is now walking around the house, waving her hand in the air like a rap artist, chanting, "Im riding my mower to cut the grass, if you dont like my stripes ya'll can kiss my a$$."

Considering that you've been legally old enough to work for less than a year, no way did you pay cash for your equipment. No chance. '09 f150 and a brand new ztr? Nope....

That's what I'm talking about! That looks a lot like my set-up when I was 16-something I bought with my own hard earned money and w/o mommy and daddy's help. I commend the one's who are doing it on their own and being modest.

Yater you don't know me and have no clue whether I bought that stuff with my money. I have worked my butt off for all my equipment. I mentioned earlier in this thread that the truck is my dad's until I turn 16 when he is going to give it to me. However, everything else in my signature I DID PURCHASE WITH MY OWN MONEY. I have to say it really cracks me up with guys coming on here bashing us young guys when they have no clue how hard we have worked etc. I have purchased everything myself. Us young guys are just as capable as you of having a successful business and working extremely hard. Why can you not see that:hammerhead:

I have an MBA (finance)....recently aquired, thank you. You could not have made the money to purchase your equipment. You can't drive yet. Stop creating false hope for the other kids around here and admit that daddy paid your way. You aren't impressing anyone but the suckers.

part time job, birthday and holiday money, all adds up. Maybe he didnt aquire it all mowing. Does sound a little fishy if he did aquire all that from mowing lawns, but there is a good chance he did buy it all himself. Some of these younger kids are smarter with money than I am.

I paid about $3500 for my first truck and still had a bit left over for other expenses. I had that saved up from a couple months walking to my first job, working for family, birthday, Christmas, etc. It's doable, I guess. But it's not my job to question how he got his equipment. I've got bet better things to worry about.

No I did not get it all from mowing!!!! Sorry for the miss communication Yater. While I still think it's ridiculous you would get on here and bash me, I do see the miss communication. However, most of this money is from mowing. I'm not left with too much (relative term since I still have enough) but I am all set up for next year equipment wise and have the accounts to justify the purchases

It might sound unprofessional in your eyes which is fine because it is a personal opinion, but if you saw my work, it would change that and thats what gets me customers and referals, thats how i have stayed in business for 6 years and grow every year. on the other hand thanks for understanding it is unique and stands out.

Would you mind if I try A old man and his diddy. I think you have done well for yourself.

Well here is a picture of my setup. I'm 18 and full time college student. Love this line of work but keep school and work balanced. (Yes, I worked hard and paid for it all my self), well...all except the truck. My dad passed that down to me. Going to purchase a Honda 21" commercial before season starts.

Nice equipment. I like the lazer. How hard its it to do both work and school? I am going to be faced with that problem next year so I'm just trying to figure out how hard it is going to be.

Not to bad, I am a sophomore this semester and so far it has worked out. I get all of my classes on either mon/wed/fri, or tue/thu. For my area, April and September are the months when grass is still growing and schedules get tight. Other than that I am able to schedule leaf cleanup and hardscaping projects so that they don't conflict with school. I also try to strategically get yards that don't have a lot of trees, therefore cutting down on leaf cleanup through the fall.

Most colleges offer some of their courses online which helps free up a lot of time. I have two of these courses this semester.

I have found that 15-20 accounts is the best for my situation. Generates good income while not overloading me. Being solo, I can do about 8 yards a day.
