Gas spraying out of carb

I'm working on a Kohler ch23s 76553 engine in a Z trak mower. Gas is spraying out of the top of the carburetor, especially when opening the throttle. Also, it will not run unless the air filter and cover are off (slowly dies when I place the filter back on top of the carb when running).

I have replaced the spark plugs, wires and coils. Have also cleaned the carburetor, replaced the fuel filter and air filter. The fuel shutoff solenoid does work (thanks Restrorob, I found that the wire going to the solenoid was bad after you mentioned checking it).

Any ideas on what to do next would be helpful

Two things come to mind,

Parts look-up shows that this carb could have a accelerator pump on it (a extra linkage from the throttle shaft leading to a cover on the carb held in place with three screws). A pin hole or crack in this Acc. pump diaphragm can cause the carb to run richer.

The other is a higher than normal float level adjustment or non-seating float valve.
