That's an old Apache camper. My Grandparents had one out in the weeds until my grandpa and i dragged it out and took it to a junk yard. You could always tell an Apache because the roof always had duct tape and bits of tarp on it to seal the leaks.

not as bad as the guy with an 80's subaru and tiny homemade woodin trailer with an 80's walkbehind and home depot hand helds who runs around my area for dirt cheap. or the spanish guys who manage to fit a walk behind in the back of an old rotted toyota pick up. or the many other guys around here who find some cheap way to haul lawn equipment. of course they dont pay the taxes, insurance, and all the other big bills us real landscapers have:nono:

What kills us around hear is the fireman and teachers, with the old 2WD pu and an even older WB that will cut a $60 lawn for $25. But come leaf time, they are nowhere to be found.
Had 1 of my customers drop me for the exact situation, and then call me for leaf removal, quoted him $1000, the year before it was $360, he asked why it was so much this year, I told to ask his fireman why the price went up.:hammerhead:

He'll learn soon those little tires are NOt rated for that kind of wieght and the 1st time he has a shredded flat and loses 1/2 a day of production where he should have invested a little more money!

This doesn't make much sense to me, but it's the point Goldy is trying to get across.
THEGOLDPRO
10-08-2009, 10:20 PM
im not bashing him for not having top of the line stuff, i made the thread because i thought it was funny to see a camper chopped in half, and gutted out with mowers in the back, not to mention it had no lights, or a license plate. that was my original goal.
but yes now that you guys mention it i do think hes a hack, who prolly doesnt pay taxes, or have insurance, seeing as how the guy was about 50 i'd say he reciently lost his job and is now driving around low balling people, and mowing for beer money. and yes its clear he is a hack. im sorry if some of you take offence to my line of thinking, if you do then you yourself are probably a hack who low-balls.

I agree with Gold on this. Guys like this kill us professional landscapers. They take food out of my kids mouth's because I refuse to cut an acre of grass for $25. If you pay liability ins, payroll taxes, workers' comp ins, truck ins(with commercial limits = 1mil - 3mil) how can you ever stand up for a guy who is doing it under the table for 1/4 of what you need to get for a lawn? In Mass, the State police now drive around looking for guys like this because Mass now has commercial inspections for trucks and trailers. Also, the IRS/Dept of Rev. pulls us over wanting to see our workers' comp cert. But neither goes into the inner cities looking for them, only the high rent districts.

Exactly. I'm w/ Gold Pro. See this kind of stuff around here all the time. Had a guy a few years ago who thought he'd make it big doing l/c. Started out w/ a Ford escort and a little home depot trailer. Had a name that screamed "lowballer". I don't think he ever made any real money and don't see him around anymore. Nope, just like yours... use all commercial equipment ''Belt-drive'' 48'' Ferris commercial wb, Stihl commercial equipment etc, the whole nine to be exact...
There's many commercial lawn companies, that select wb vs zero turns even on large accounts does that make them less PRO...?
Never assume your not replaceable because you have a zero-turn. There's guys that prefer wb's and add sulkies and mow acres just like you...
As times get tougher. so does the competition, I've see fly by nights with zero turns it's not what in your trailer that makes you successful it's what's inside your head...

i never said walkbehinds suck, i have 3 of em, they have their place in mowing like every thing else, with that said i would never pick a walkbehind over a z-mower for mowing large properties, or large commercial accounts, thats a ******ed argument. z-mowers are faster, and cut your time in half usually over a walkbehind, less time= more money.
and i had a nice brandy new exmark 48 inch belt drive, and sold it with less then 30 hours on it because it never got use on my accounts, it was a waist of space in the shop. i only run 60 inch decks.

If in fact the above is true, you need to stop looking at these guys as competition. View them as flies and shoe them away, You can improve your situation by marketing yourself differently. Direct market yourself to the accounts you want that are currently served by these guys. Go and seek them out and tell them why they should be having you service them. Man up get aggressive roll right over them. It is not always about the money. Knock on doors introduce yourself sell your service with your legitimacy and turn this around they should look at you as competition not you look at them as competition. You need more exposure in the areas you want to expand to. Tell every customer you have right now that you need more accounts and ask if they could spread the word, Your business cards should be all over the place and you should have a small constant add in the local paper where your name can become familiar.

i never said you wern't legit, im saying if you dont see a problem with some old d00d towing a camper around and lowballing people then your views are flawed. i never once said you were a hack, nor do i care if you are.
and i dont have an 09 cummins because i dont like beating the piss out of new trucks working them, i prefer to run older trucks that are paid off for work vehicles. i like to keep my overhead low if possible, so i can buy the toys i play with on the weekends.
like my boat, and my motorcycle, and my 32 foor camper with my 40k dollar 2008 tundra i use to pull it.

so lets just agree to disagree i suppose, as im getting bored arguiring with you guys.

I think you need to take an english class. Learn to spell!!! And, if you have these "awesome" dodge work trucks, why do you have a Tundra to pull a camper, in case you didn't know, pulling a camper puts "work" on a vehicle, if not more because you're towing a heavier weight.

The point I'm trying to make is I'm still going to charge you $45 to cut your lawn whether I'm pulling the trailer with my F-150, F-650, the 07 3500, or the 09 3500.
What I drag the trailer to a property with has no bearing on price.
That dude with the shitty trailer could be the most expensive guy in town. You can't judge.
Agree to disagree.
By the way I wrote a $64,000 check to buy the F-650. No payments. Wrote checks for my 07 & 09 1 tons as well. Wrote a check for my 17D. Writing another check this month for a 50D.
You can't assume debt because we have nice stuff. Personally I live in an 850 square foot shack built in 1899. Saves money.

it really doesnt matter what the guy charges or what anybody thinks the point is he looks ******ed pulling that around a clean and safe trailer is a thousand bucks at most get with the program.

This stuff just boggles my mind. Who would want to pay someone that has that sort or image to cut their grass? Honestly, i know i dont have all the top of the line stuff but c'mon guys he's obviously a hack. I would have gotten me a trailer first and decent mowers instead of that.

I am bored so I hope you guys don't mind if jump in this street fight hear, SO you guys... you seem to have strong ideas on image and professionalism. I want you guys to go back and re-read all your posts and grade yourself and each other on image and professionalism on a scale of 1 to 10 come back and post your grades.
And You COOLTYPE what you posted hear Quote "stop saying we all started somewhere if i had to start there i would have waited longer to start because thats not the way to go into business" end quote.
Really? now please tell us all hear the proper way to "go into business" because after reading that I swear, I almost soiled myself laughing. Now it is apparent and quite clear you are unaware of how one of the top ten largest
landscape maintenance firms in the United States got started, if I am not mistaken it was with a rusted and dilapidated station wagon needing a muffler, 1 old bowered push mower and rake and broom hanging out the back window. You could probably call them for some business advice but they most likely will not answer their phone becouse they are to busy counting the 30 million in earnings they reported. So care to enlighten us with all your thoughts on that?
Ok I am done now, please don't hate me.......

I give myself a B- in making fun of this idiot,I should have really came in hard in the beginning first shoot down his rig then finish off with some wishful thinking like i hope his trailer gets hit by a train today so nobody has to look at it again. I appologize for holding back I am usually a real prick.
I think I might just go out tomorrow and show some real professionalism by beating the **** out of people with shitty trailers, This is getting out of hand.

I may not own my own business. I probly know more about business than you. I'm working for a landscape contractor that specialized in high end commercial landscape installations, and I'll be working with a good friend of mine who has his crew (me and him) which is in charge of all the maintenance of the installations to earn more experience and have more money saved so I don't have to have pos trucks like yours. I'm a freshman in college, you seem like you haven't gone to college. Therefore, according to society, you are basically a ****** compared to me. You want to see pictures of my f*cking dorm? Why in the hell would I have my location be Champlin, MN (My hometown, which is 5 hrs away from G-Forks)/Grand Forks, ND (UND) if I was in high school?? I do know exactly how to run a business, all on paper though, have I executed it? Obviously not yet. This is why I am in college, learning from those who have their doctorate and some are owners themselves. So that when I do start that I'll be doing it right. Just because I'm not an owner doesn't mean I don't know how. Jackass.

Just trying to keep a great post going. But I have to agree with Gold these guys are very bad for biz. they lowball, work for cash, no ins. and so on. I think like any other biz we should look and act like a group of pros. So that other types of biz or people know why the costs are what they are. Take pride in what you do and do it right.

not that it matters, but i have a bachelors degree in finance, just thowing that out there, eventho that in no way accredits my opinion when it comes to landscaping or trailer evaluation techniques.
There is a guy in my neighborhood that used to roll around with mowers in his dodge neon trunk. its a newer neon like 06 or so. Why wouuldnt you trade it in on a truck is all i would like to know. He is still using the neon he just bought a trailer and one of those snapper mowers the funny looking riding mowers with 32" deck or so. He mows a yard a couple yards down from some i do, in the amount of time i did three he still didnt have his done and he had been there no telling how long before i got there.
This thread has inspired me to take a picture and post, i tried to get a pic last week but phone was dead.

Any way I never get on this site I will have to do it more often. I was just looking for some organic lawn care help. Man did I get off pace. And firefighting is professional? It's basically subsidized. It's just another govt entity.
whether it is subsidized or not has nothing to do with the professionalism. and im also pretty sure that his department is feeling the economy pinch just like every other dept. in the nation. worn or out of date equipment , or with equipment/apparatus that should be put out of service.
with governments feeling the pinch the turd only trickles down hill........
with apparatus running at 300,xxx+ and gear at 3000+ it adds up quick. or for some--doesn't add up at all.
