Have a John Deere M653 with a 23 hp kohler. Engine runs as it should when sitting idle, however, when a load is placed on the engine it looses a lot of power. My Dealer here doesn't know whats wrong, $389.00 of labor later. Any thoughts

You need a new dealer and the dealer needs a new mechanic!

What exactly did they do for $389.00? I would think a compression test to start with. That should tell a lot. Man, I had my valves adjusted and carb cleaned for $60.00 down here! What is the labor rate there?

Hahaha..... Got to agree ^^^^

Without engine model and spec numbers posted, It sounds like the governor isn't working properly. Maybe just a minor adjustment ?

Bring that thing a couple hours south and I'll fix ya right up !!! :weightlifter:

Ok Dealer charged me for there labor of attempting to fix problem, 85.00 per hour. They are telling me that they think it is an electrical problem, possibly the stator. I have my doubts, the engine is a Kohler CH 23S-76553 23HP
This is what they did to me, call come in from dealer, it the clutch.....new clutch. same problem, its the fuel pump, new pump....ext. Get the picture. New clutch, starter, battery, volt regulator, fuel pump, carburetor. Total bill was like 990.00, and after me about to go postal at the dealer they settled on the 389.00. Great got a bunch of new parts.
They told me they did a compression test, is that something I can do. Very little experience with working on engines, for now.
I did play with the governor prior to taking the mower to them, did not solve the lose of power with the load.

So they were experimenting with YOUR money. Yeah, you need a new dealer. Where in north Fl. do you live?

What did the compression test show??
Did they do a leakdown test?? THAT would tell a lot.

Playing is one thing and adjusting properly is another, Give this a try;
