I do quite a few gravel driveways and parking lots every spring.
For $4795.00 I don't think I can go wrong, it'll get a ton of looks for sure.
Sent away for the video, has anyone seen one in action?
Gravel Rat: I will not be using this on the 67% grades in BC. I will be using this on the Palouse.

If you grade a drive at a 120mph, I'll give you that grader trailer thing! Better yet, do GR's 97% grade drive ways at 20mph and I'll give you two of those things..

LOL!
Rememver that thing called the "load handler" or something like that. It was a tarp that you put in the bed of your truck, attached to the tailgate was a wind up roll. Now really do you think you'll be able to crank out a yard of topsoil by hand:dizzy::laugh:
But the guy that made that is probably setting fine right now...
Well my Idaho brother, I guess that would be a thumbs down.
Since your new here, you learned the first lesson on this forum the hard way. NO SLACK.:waving:
I don't know what you have for equipment, but if you need a grader, there is a company (Grouser I think it is) that makes a mount that goes under your tractor. If you have a skid steer or CTL I would go with the grader attachment.
That thing does look like a POS I must say.

I will admit, it does not look ultra heavy duty.
However I was not planing on building an Interstate Highway with it.
My use for it would have been private roads, long driveways, and parking lots.
The idea I had was I could fill my F-650 with gravel. Then with this hooked to the back I could set a small spread with the chains and spread and smooth the gravel in one pass.
That won't work will it?
I also thought I could use it for spot repairs behind my Chevy.

Man, how come nobody told us about these things?! $5K?!?! It appears we've been grading with the wrong equipment, guess I'll have to tell our blade hand tomorrow we're cutting his baby loose for an F550 and that sweet trailer-grader. The boss will be thrilled at all the overhead he can get rid of by selling a blade. We'll pocket the winnings from the blade sale and make a run for Vegas, we can afford to fly the Canadian brothers GR and Ronnie down there so they can both bust their cherries, but not before we finish blue topping subgrade for an on-ramp alignment a full 2 weeks ahead of schedule with the trailer-grader. Life will be sweet!
But seriously, that thing is a pile and a waste of ANYONE'S time, especially someone who does this for a living.

TimberKing B-20 portable sawmill. I take down a lot of trees every year and rather than turn them into chips or firewood I could mill them into boards.
One of my guys used to work in a sawmill and knows about cutting boards.

I own 2 loadhandlers. They've paid for themselves 1,000 times over. Don't knock it till you've tried it.
I pull in to the dump, open my grass box, crank out a 7'x4'x4' cube of grass in one minute, shut my door and drive off. It can't do too much weight, but I've unloaded sod/dirt with it, too. Possibly the best $100 I've ever spent on equipment.

93turbo
10-13-2009, 12:47 AM
the diesel will probably use half the fuel as the gas motor and RPMs will not mater as it will be geared /pullied for the optimum operating range. As for the tow behind grader thing it could be very useful if you were grading gravel out if it was built right but from the pic it looks kinda cheaply built and poorly designed. I'll try and get some pics of what we use at the township when we just want to respread the gravel on the roads and not regrade it.

If you want a mill buy a Woodmizer or find a used Woodmizer they are the best bandsaw mill on the market.
As for that trailer grader you would need a pretty soft surface to grade.

The pull behind grader trailer thingy could be a great way to keep the gravel road maintained going down to the river. Then at the same time double as hauling your Jon boat on top for a lil fishin time.
One of my customers purchased a saw mill deal like that one or similar to it. His was in a kit sort of. He supplied the steel and built his own frame work, track system and the section for the power plant and band saw pulleys off their plans. They supplied the main components.
It does a pretty good job actually, just watch out for hidden nails and what not in embedded in the trees you cut - hard on the saw teeth. He did say that spend the money on good blades was well worth the while.

Milling lumber is an interesting idea. A few minor drawbacks I see: The building industry is dead, there is more supply of lumber right now than there has been in years and the price is dropping. I would prefer to spend 18k elsewhere......If you are interested in lumber, find old barns and strip them of their exterior shell and beams.......there is still a substantial market for that. As far as the pull behind road grader for $5k, you would be better off using that money as payments on a piece of equipment like a skid, mini skid, ho or whatever.......pass on that one. I recently purchased a RoadRunner grading box and did about 240 tons of road base on roads in Arizona. It works well and even a novice can get good results in a very short time. I used a regular box blade years ago for about two weeks and then gave it away......if you are going to use a box blade at least get a roller attached to the back of it - that way you can grade flat, do roads or do yards and leave a fairly professional looking job......

If you're thinking about doing some grading, I wonder if it might be worth it to look around and try finding a small older grader like an Allis Chalmers or something. Odds are you'd have to spend a bit more than for the pull behind model you were talking about, but it would be far more useful. I have seen them go in the $7500 to $8000 range.

Graders are cool, but they're heavy. If there is such a thing as a compact grader under 10 tons Ive never seen it.
I'm still waiting on a sawmill quote. That would be a cool tool to have, I could have some fun with that thing. Being an out of the box kind of guy I'd sell the lumber at the Farmers Market as a niche item. Sell the fact that we recycled the tree rather than chipped it to yuppies. It's crazy what they pay for organic veggies. I'll make bank on "organic lumber".

Here is 3 of them. Noram also makes one that I did not link to. I think the Champion is the best of the lot, but I really like the PSI/Mauldin grader for its versatility. I have tried on three different occasions to buy one at auction. I have yet to see one go less than 30K. The last one in Belgrade,Mt last fall went for 40K. I would really like one but I would like to "steal one" just kind find anyone to cooperate.

Heavy, maybe, but you can road them to a job like a backhoe if it's not too far, if you're just worried about it being too heavy for your truck / trailer combo.
Seriously, though, I would suggest in the 5k price range, you could get a gray market japanese tractor and a box blade, or a used harley rake for yoru skid steer. Both work fairly well on gravel drives.
