Have you ever had a customer that didn't want stripes in their yards?

Yes...most of them. Striping usually looks just dumb...kinda makes the lco look unprofessional for not knowing what else to do. It was done for reel mowers and grass dispersement and since then has taken on a life of its own. Kinda like the baggy pants from prison is now popular with younger people...and they dont even realize why.

Around here stripes seperate the pro's from the fly by nighters. Everyone wants nice lines in their yards.
It also takes less time if you go back and forth.

Kinda funny when going in a straight line defines the pro's. Even more funny is that these pros actually think its faster to turn around 50 times on someones lawn.

Beauty is subjective. What some of us think looks good (e.g., a nicely striped and cross-cut lawn) does not appeal to everybody.
But I will say it takes more skill to stripe in straight lines and go around in circles and old man mow.

Funny..the only pic I have is of stripes. You would have to search my posting under wright stander stripe question or something like that. I cant post pics that would identify the property I maintain. You can check out www.ceramilawns.com for an idea. They suck at taking good photos...but you'll get the idea at least

the only pictures I see in the gallery are either striped lawns or areas to small to be striped.

When I'm 40, I hope to be beyond cutting grass and into design and construction work.

Guys, you're grass cutters. Not engineers. I love stripes as much as the next guy, but it's not worth arguing over. There's bigger arguments that deserve more of our attention.

i had an old lady like 93 ask me if i had only mowed half of the yard like every other pass or something because she didint understand lol so i never did it again because it was a hassle trying to explain.
As for unprofessional, etc. etc. anybody who thinks that is an idiot. It makes the yard look good instead of mowing in random patterns or circles. Your gonna leave a footprint in the grass if your cutting fescue or anything like it its inevetable so why not leave a professional one??? better to see stripes than crop circles.

HA i do the same exact thing! my customers dont usually notice and dont care! but i like to stripe it cuz its fun to watch other lcos stare at it. i had a guy working for my neabor, he and his other worker came over and starred at my lawn for a while. it was that or a few kids were playing checkers in the lawn!

lol, that's great! Most of my accounts ask for them but by description. You know, "The lines like they have on baseball fields". And it's nice watching other LCO's slow down as they pass one of mine. I actually gained a couple of accounts for next year because of neighbors with lawn NV.

personally i think putting my striped lawn up against a lawn cut in circles looks a lot more professional. I've never had anyone complain about the stripes.

There's something in between mowing in circles and obsessing over artificially created stripes done with a roller.
Just mow in alternate patterns, let the machine do its thing, and acheive a happy medium
I certainly would not use extreme stripes in a lawn as a selling point. Why? Because while it may differentiate you from your competition to a customer who actually WANTS them or cares about them, it also takes a little longer to acheive that look. Maneuvering around obstacles, darting over to hit a missed blade, then having to redo the stripe next to it,whatever, it takes longer. So to those who don't care, don't like them, etc, your price will be just a little higher than it might be.
And it's a double edged sword. The more extreme the stripes, the more any of your flaws show. And the more you trumpet the stripes, the more demanding the customers will be of any flaws because you just told them how great you are at getting it to look like the ball park.
Only someone living in areas where there are large sections of grass growing in generally flat planes (slopes do this too) would think it's possible to get super straight super vivid stripes all the time. If you're doing lawns where there isn't a flat 10' run it's pretty pointless.
Just beware, once you tout stripes, it'll be hard to go back. My better cool season lawns look striped. Just not laid over like the roller effect so the lawn is distinctly two-tone.
A lot of people actually prefer lawns to look more like their idealized version of nature. Crazy muthas. And aren't you really just imitating the look of a lawn mowed with reel mowers anyway?
They're very impressive, but in 18 years I've yet to even get a question or comment about stripes. Bluegrass gives more of that effect I'm sure, but even with thousands of tall fescue lawns mowed, it's never come up even once.
But if you tell people it's a sign of superiority, they will, like in everything else, come to believe it. Just like some modern art.

also dont forget that depending on the time of day and what angle the sun is at your stripes will show up more or less defined. I stripe because thats the way I mow.
