Every little bit helps to market your business.
But they all have small returns. In my opinion.
Not knowing how you would disperse the 50 thousand door hangers.
But you will find your biggest return is to solicit existing customers to find new ones.
It may be a higher cost per lead but you will find it produces less leads and a bigger return.
Especially if you use a give away to your better customers. They will give you better leads than anything else you try.

.3-2%............

.3% that is probably close by the time you figure in you estimate 50 get 3 and loose 2 due to non payment.

do you have 50,000 doors in your work radius to hang them on?

Yep, there are approx. 290,000 homes in my area.

I would use a service that charges .12 per piece to deliver them. With the hangers it will cost approx. $7500 to do 50,000.

IF and I say IF you were to land just 5% of that 50k. I assume you are prepared to handle 2500 extra accounts.
Are you pre-pricing them?
If not, do you have the staff to go out and bid each one?
For that matter, do you have the staff to even handle the phone volume?
IF you have to bid each one, and meet the customer 20 mins each on average.
Thats over 830 man hours just to meet, greet, bid.
Staggering numbers for a 2-man crew like myself.
Your situation is most likely different and you are hopefully prepared.

I'm hoping for something like 500 weekly mow and blow accounts. I hate biweekly accts and Im trying to limit them. My big competitor just raised his prices by 5 dollars a cut which is good.

Ok cool, 8 separate crews 8 trucks 8 trailers and 8 Z's 8 walk behinds or any reasonable vairiation. 16 guys mowing 60+ lawns a week should get the job done if it doesn't rain and everyone shows up. I would suggest a larger crew and a cupple of extra trucks to be reliable but shopping smartly 75,000g's should get that ball rolling nicely. 7 g's or so weekly pay roll so I suggest min of 25 30g's of reserve fluid cash for pay roll and daily expences.

GTC,
I'm in the DFW area, I do about 50,000 door hangers every March. You will get about
.1% signup. I have done this for the past two years. I think our markets are about the same.

So thats 50 customers right. I heard that you only get 1 customer for every 1,000 flyers passed out in TX. That was back in 2004 that I heard that.

It's probably about 10 % of that now due to the economic situation ... it's much different than it was back in 2004 !!

Back in the day when I did maintanance I never surcomed to the biweekly deal, my come back would be Sir or Mam do you have a job? Most would say yes. I then would ask them what would they say to their employer if they said they were only needed biweekly??? Then I would shut up and wait until they spoke and saw were I was comming from.
If they countered with well this is different, your just a lawn cutter! I would say my employees the people that take care of your house like to eat and do the same things that you folks like to do.
If they still came up with excuses I would say then we are not the company for you to matain your home and thanked them for their business. I would still send them my seasonal news letter and many came back to the monthly plan we proposed for them
The most important word in business is to learn to say NO even though it hurts, people hate to be rejected and will want your services if you stand your ground.
You never loose money on a job you didn't take

fedcopcutting, do you put prices on your pieces or do you do estimates on site? What is your minimum charge?

Yeah................. you best go ahead and hang this wet dream up.
If simple math is troubling you then I know this is out of your league.
50,000 x .01 = 500
fedcop made an error in his statement I believe....
50,000 x .1 = 5000
Anywho.... let me know how it turns out.

I made a mistake, 500 customers is definately more like it.

I doubt you will get 500 customers out of 50k flyers.

I don't think his numbers were off. I'm guessing he meant .1%, not 10% or even 1%. It would look more like:
50000 x .001(this is .1% as a decimal) =50 new customers
NOT EITHER OF THESE: 50000 x .01(1% as a decimal)=500 new customers
50000 x .1(10% as a decimal)=5000 new customers
So I'd guess somewhere between 50 and 75 new customers sounds right. It may not seem like much for $8k in marketing, but figure out what those accounts are worth over the course of an entire season. That could mean anywhere from 35-70k depending on the accounts.
