Hey Guys!
Yeah i'm back again SORRY!
I came across a 2001 Chevy 3500 Silverado Duramax. Its in almost perfect condition i cant find anything wrong with it at all. has 120,000 miles on it but the body looks immaculate in and out. Took it for a drive and it was a nice ride really liked it!
Are there any normal issues with these trucks or this particular year?
- It is the 6.6L Turbo Diesel (Duramax)
- 4x4
- Extended Cab (Not Crew Cab)
Any experience with these trucks or this year and model especially would love to hear it (good and bad). Just curious as to normal problems or issues to look for with these trucks.
If you need to know something else just ask i can see if i have the info.
Thanks Guys,
Gregg

If it's a 2001 than it's the "LB7" variant of the Duramax. The most common problem with that engine is injector issues, but I believe GM will replace them if they fail, and warranty them for 7 years/200,000 miles. Sounds like a pretty good truck to me.

What do injectors normally cost on these trucks if that was to go? GM still covers it even if im not the original owner? (would i need to take it to a Chevy dealer then? assuming i knew what the issue was)
The trucks only defect was a crack in the windshield (looks like it was from a rock shot).
But they are going to replace the Windshield, it has new tires, they did the oil change, a tranny service, changed the fuel filter, and the Oil pan looked in good shape.
And like i said the body, interior, fame everything just looks in good shape, no rust or anything like that.
from what i hear these trucks usually have good trannys too.
Thanks

Cost?, not sure. Yeah, if it started having problems than you could take to a Chevy dealer to have them diagnose it, but I'm not positive on how the whole "injector warranty" thing works. Typical injector issue signs are a rough idle on start up or at all, white smoke typically means a leaking injector, and it's possible the truck may not even starting at all. That model year has the 5 Speed Allison auto, which all of the Allison's are great transmissions, can't go wrong there.

Good information thanks a lot WH401 ! much appreciated.
Yeah i think the 2001 had the 5 speed auto (from what i researched) not the 6. Forgive me for a stupid question but i assume i will get worse gas millage with the 5 yea? Any disadvantages to the 5 speed?
But yeah i still hear very good things about them.
Thanks again

I don't think fuel mileage will be that bad, but I could be wrong, I've never driven a D-max. Here's some food for thought; With the .71 ratio of 5th gear and a 3.73 axle ratio it should put you at 2k rpm at 70 with stock tires. With the .61 of 6th in the newer allison and a 3.73 ratio it should put you at about 1750 RPM at 70 with stock tires. I think the only difference between a 2001 allison and a 2006 allison (6 speed) is the extra overdrive in the 06'. Other then that I think the internals are pretty much the same.

that sounds very similar actually. not much different at all.
I know the 2001 has overdrive on it (im almost positive) but the 6 speed is just a bit more powerful?
Either way should suite my needs still i think lol thanks.

It's a 2001. 7 yr warranty on injectors is up. I just sold my 02 because it went out of injector warranty. My friend had injectors done under warranty at the dealer and I think he said $4500. I'm sure you could find them online and have a local shop do the work for $3000. This is not a rare issue on these trucks. I got 132,000 trouble free miles out of mine but I felt like I was living on borrowed time. Make sure you adjust your purchase price so that you won't feel bad if they go.

The LB7 duramaxs are bad with injectors. If you do decide to get it, get a warranty on it. I would guess it would be around $6-700 per injector if not more.

yea so the injectors on this year seem to be the most common issue i see. Guess its one thing i'll have to look out for.
Other then that then and its possible the ones on the truck might last me a while everything else looks good.
Thanks again for all the info guys!
if anything else comes to mind just post it on here or send me a PM. Thanks!

If you want more info on them go to http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/index.php
I have a 02 3500 with only 76,000 miles on it but so far so good. One thing to remember is it is cheaper to replace injectors then it is to replace a whole truck for new. I will keep mine till it falls apart in the ground which will take a long time since I still see trucks working every day from the late 80's and all through the 90's. If and when my injectors fail I will replace all of them and keep on trucking. With the new ones easily exceeding $50,000 and having all kinds of new emissions stuff I will stick with the older tried and true motors for now.
