There is this lot near a busy street in the city where i live. The grass is never cut and had become really high. It was a big eye soar on that area. Anyway, when I'm driving around there earlier today, i see the grass has been cut and there is a sign that says " Lawn Maintenance donated by XYZ Lawncare". I thought that was a great idea. If people see you making the community look better for free, they might let you cut their grass. Has anybody else seen or done anything like this? If you have done this before, what was the return?

Wow thats a realy good idea. Theres a church right up the street from me, withen walking distance, and the grass gets cut maby 3 or 4 times a year. I think next year Ill try that and put up a sign.

Not a bad ideal but in the cases of code enforcement you/we must have permission before we enter onto someone property. I know we are making it better by cleaning it up but there is a legal right we must have permission from the local code office or property owner.Again a good ideal we do our share of work like that.
that's a great idea, my house is seen by a lot of people every day, on a busy road, if any of you would like to mow it for the summer you can put out all the signs on it you want.

I don't knowwwww, I'd think it'd be a real attraction for "hard luck" cases calling u. Ya know, my own lawn only gets cut 5-6 times a year too, maybe while I'm out making $$$ you could stop and cut mine too:laugh:

We've been doing this for years. the park story is sort of funny, too....Back in about 2001, I think it was...We went in and cleaned up one of the city parks in Flint. I did 2 weeks of mowing before the actual community effort to paint the playground equipment and such. The local news came and did a story on u, and the local paper (Flint Journal) did 2 write ups on us. 62 acres of park and it was one of the most rewarding things I've done in my life. I met alot of great people during this time, many of whom are still good friends. Here is a link to the thread I did during this time. http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=17140&highlight=Kearsley

yeah I'm thinking the same thing. All this is going to attract is the cheapos looking for a handout. Open yourself up to a ton of liabilities as well. I do ONE charity job...local senior citizens center. Two blocks from my house and takes about 45 minutes to do. I han an old lady call me in the spring because she said I did such a good job on the center wanting me to mow her yard. I told her my minimum charge and she got upset..wanted me to mow her's for free as well......just saying

Not unless someone asks me to because I would be pissed too if I found some hack had done one of my customer's
yards or especially my own just because they THOUGHT it looked tall and wanted to do someone a favor.
I have more than a few customers whose grass might get to be about a foot tall and my own does it too,
now it's none of anyone's business but mine and theirs and if they didn't want it that way they can call me anytime (some do lol).
But I get that crap, some neighbor thinks whatever so they start tearing into my turf with their lower cut height setting...
Then, soon as they find out just how BAD the clumping is killing their engine they hightail out of there half way through.
That or they try their dangest to finish but either way it looks like total CRAP!
Now what kind of a favor is this, to clump up and hack and ruin someone else's turf?
Here, how funny is this:
Hamilton was blowing grass onto the sidewalk and shredding trash in the park that had not been picked up prior to mowing,
so she called the police.
Yeah, I guess so!
Upon their arrival, Hamilton told police officers “he is sick of seeing the grass so long in parks, so he is fixing the problem”
Police arrested him after he continued to mow when they told him to stop.
Dang straight, should have minded his own business, it's not his problem but he chose to make it his,
so now he has to deal with the consequences of taking on somebody else's problem.
At the very least he could have stopped...

We have 2 properties we do for charity. One is a house being raffled off and the other is a busy intersection. Our sign says " this green space adopted by....". We have gained a lot of buisness from these two.

usually in the summer if i see elderly people out pushing there yard ill stop and ask if i can help, i have never asked to put out a sign in the yard , but it sounds like a good idea
we all like to help when it is needed and we have time so whats the harm in getting a little free advertising for it
but, what about liabilty, is it worth it?

I think you just have to be careful what lot it is you're cutting. If you're cutting someones lawn for free than more people will want their lawns cut for free. But if it like an island at an intersection, then i think less people will be inclined to ask if you would cut their lawn for free.

There are two ways I would look at this.
1. If you are looking to do something nice for the neighborhood then go for it!
Keep in mind most people only notice it when it look likes crap, after its cleaned up nobody cares anymore. Since your name in the front of the house you have to make sure you keep it up.
2. If you doing it get advertising, there are cheaper ways. Craigslist is free, the local paper might charge 60 to 100 bucks a month. Having decals on your truck could cost you 200-300 and that will last years. But maintaining a city lot should bring in 30 to 40 bucks weekly with $100-200 yearly cleanings. So you can see there are better ways to advertise.
