Ok so for those of you who dont know im finishing high school and im in metals class I was wanting to build 4' mesh trailer sides for my trailer. I was just wondering if anyone had pics of their trailer or even ideas of cost maybe ideas on how to do it. I was also thinking while im building these to also put up a side gate are these useful? Thanks.

I would just use angle iron or square tubing. Im about to do the same to my open trailer. you use the angle iron for support then just weld the mesh to the angle iron.

You would be Ok using angle steel for those sides, you really dont need square tubing because they arent really bearing any load or weight, plus square tubing would add a ton of weight to the trailer.

No offense but get a darn out a piece of paper and sketch it out, or if you want to buy some plans, I bet that your shop teacher might be able to give you a hand with it.
as for material I'd second angle iron.

side gate is just some hinges and buil a gate out of square tubing with mesh. simply weld hinges to the trailer and the gate.

Easy way to make hinges:
Take some of 1/4" flat stock, approx 2" x 4", Cut enough to support your load. My rear ramps have 4 of them, one on each edge of my trailer, two in the center, my 6ft side ramp has two, one on each end of the gate. Punch a 1" hole through each piece. Weld them sticking out horizontally from your trailer frame at the outside edges of where you want your ramps..
Make the same pieces again and weld them to the top of your ramps. Now just take 1" round stock use it as your hinge pin. Line up the holes in your ramps and the ones on your trailer, and shove the 1" round stock through the one on the left edge of your trailer, through the ramp, and through the other one on the right edge of your trailer. My rear ramps are standard rear ramps with one piece of round stock threaded through the tops and the 1/4" flat welded to the trailer. Two of the 4 flat stock pieces are welded 2" each way from the centerline of the trailer. Because they are all on one piece of round stock, I can slide my ramps back and forth to accommodate different width items I want to load. HTH, hard to explain without pics.

I want to do the same thing to the next trailer I get. I called to find out much a 5x10 trailer with mesh sides and they said it would run you about $1400! $##%#@ Any ways I am looking for a decent used trailer and do what your doing but without the side gate. Do you have any pictures of how it turned out and how much in materials it cost you?
Thanks Andy

To tell you the truth I still havent done the project. I was waiting on the mowing season to get over to start. I'm guessing the total cost will be about $200. But I also have a 20' trailer

I'm in the process of getting my trailer ready also. I have a 16' trailer-I can have the sides put on for $725 but I just don't want to spend that kind of money. Now, I'm considering lumber sides but I don't know If I'm going to like the looks of it-I want to look professional and not like they just hired Bubba!!!:dizzy::dizzy:
