I am looking to buy a long lasting durable yet cut well trimmer line for my Stihl FS85/FS110. I have Auto-Cut 25-2 head on it and currently using STIHL premium quality .095 line. At a STIHL dealer location the owner told me that he likes to use a Magnum Gator Trimmer Line .105 on his STIHL trimmer. I think he said squire. Mine is round. Now, there are Twisted line as well, and not quite sure which (including other brand) is the best!? :cool2:

I use Echo .095 line and fount that of all the other lines that I have tried it was the most durable. I had a 3lb spool of the magnum .095 line (the square stuff) and it did a pretty good job but didn't last long. Now unless I'm edging or get to close to a chain link fence I only have to bump the head once per yard. The Echo stuff I run is similar to the stihl line but is cheaper.

Best stuff I've used.

I am now on my second 5 lb. spool of Gatorline Magnum .095 square.

I have used and hated: Stihl X-cut, Grass Gator star, and Echo (cant remember the designation but it is orange)

I loved but cannot replace the John Deere Premium line lasted the longest.

All in .095 size. I like the Gatorline and it seems to last the longest of all with the exception of the John Deere line.

I have heard that the Shakesphere pulvirizor stuff is awesome too.

?????twist by desert extrusion is the longest spiral line if have ever seen, tough as nails but it cuts not as clean as it is rounded not edged. we use a blue square spiraled line ?????twist by shakespeare and it cuts really clean with hardly any power drain on the engine. i wish it lasted longer. have used square in the past, was pretty good, used echo and although it is tough and edged(star pattern) i think it did not cut as clean and it seemed to make the trimmer head grab and pull down into the grass.

i use the gator line round haven't tried the square i also run fs80r weed eaters the ones they don't make anymore damn them anyway i swear by it i also have about 12 stock weed eater spools from stihl i wind them and keep them in my truck it saves lots of time just pop one off put the spring on your other spool that's wound up and go back to work less than 30 seconds i also use the .095 best thing about it is it just doesn't break off into pieces it actually wears down like its suppose to just my 2 cents.

What do you like about FS80r ?? I am debating to see which one to keep FS85r or FS110r. ... they are both clean, looks good and runs good. I know FS110r has a cleaner engine with environmentally friendly rating.

I spooled twice with it and took this crap back to the dealer.

Firecracker on concrete wears out faster, breaks one side off, or simply will not unspool from the head. Worse 5lb spool I've ever owned.

You ought to try the Stihl 0.095 line, the orange stuff. It's not any more than the firecracker and won't give problems as noted above. Thumbs Up

Whatever is cheap. Line is not one of those things to splurge on. Of course I am an owner not very often an operator so I guess I am kind of partial. But I really have not found anything worth what they charge for it.

Currently using Husqvarna Titanium Force .105 but prefer using Desert Extrusion Desert Vortex .105. Have also used Echo's and Shakespeare's before but will get them again on small spools only if in a pinch.

Gator Magnum Super Twist 095 here. I love the way that the twisted lines fly straighter and put less drag on the engine. I can run the line 1" longer without any RPM loss or stress on engine and clutch.

Production has halted on the FS80. Some dealers and distributors may have a few left, but it's spring order season for Stihl dealers and most of the remaining inventory is being snapped up. New for next season will be the FS70 RC-E. It has a 27.2cc engine rated 1.2 hp (vs. 25.4cc/1.27 on the 80), similar weight to the 80, and a forged connecting rod. The gearbox has four bearings and is cable driven. Also standard will be the Easy2Start recoil and the semi-automatic choke system. It has a two year commercial warranty, but a lifetime warranty on the cable and clutch. There's also a FC 70 RC-E edger version. Nice, compact units.

Hi everyone. I tried the Squared trimmer line .130 and .105. The .130 lasts the longest and its tough but the only bad thing is that i bogs down the trimmer and it may not fit in some trimmers aswell. The .105 seems to work best for me it lasts long and wont bog the trimmers as much. I never heard about soaking it in water, but thats a good Idea. How long do you soak it for and what does it actually do for it?

I don't know the make, but its a twisted black string. Almost no noise and it lasts very long. It cuts nice and doesn't curl up. Ill try and find the box it came in. i get it at the Toro dealer.

I used to use the echo cross fire line, I really like it and it lasted, I then was turned onto rotary .105 black twist, this stuff is out of this world, i hated it at first because on a chain link fence it would just jerk the string trimmer right out of your arms.I was complaining at the dealership one day and had a guy start asking questions about my use, it turned out he was the Rotary rep. It was pointed out that the string was not breaking and that any line worth having will show a knife blade appearance on the end after use and not a clean break.I have learned to back off the chain link fences and let the tip cut.I give more of the stuff away in parking lots to other cutters and have a good local following, just good stuff and not afraid to say so.

softens the line so it doesnt break off as easy. just dump your package of line in a bucket of water and leave it until you need more.

Camo Lawn

Im sorry but water will soften plastic line? dont get mad Im just askin! I'll do anything to make my spool last longer! You put a whole five pound spool in a wash tub then mount it on my trailer and it stays softer or it needs to stay in the water until u use it?

sw45
06-10-2010, 01:17 AM
I leave mine in a bucket or plastic container with a lid in the toolbox. Leave it til you need it then put it back. It will soften just like fishing line does when its been in water. With more moisture in the line, it will be more flexible and less prone to breakage

LOL, if the line works properly, cuts cleanly, doesnt bog your trimmer. Id say you are doing everything exactly right. idk how u can cut that many yards and have used that little amount of line. props

it also depends on how large your spools are haha. i think this is an interesting thread. it has given me som valuable info. soaking your line in water? i dont think anyone around here does that. i might should try it, but i dont know how much it would affect anything.

I see we have many comedians on Lawnsite lol. Nice to see that. Hmm I might should start some sort of comedic thread. I know a lot of guys remove the guard/ debris shield off of their trimmers, I however have never tried that before until recently. I took em off and I'm gonna run them this way for a while to see what I prefer. Still haven't soaked my line yet, might try it soon though. I run Shindaiwa and Echo trimmers by the way. I have used economy commercial round line .095, Echo Crossfire .095 line, Shindaiwa Silent Twist .095 line. I haven't tried any larger diameter lines although it seems to me that most of you guys use the larger line.

Still trying to understand the soaking thing. Plastic is 100% waterproof. The Florida sun warms it to a certain degree but not enough to affect the tensile strength. I go with operator technique above all. Also I leave the guards on, gotten hit with too much nastiness over the years.

Husqvarna Ti line has been the best line i've used. I have tried gator magnum .95 twist, stihl, echo and the Husqvarna has been the best. It last the longest and does not brake of fuse in the feed head like the gator magnum.

my Fs130 would snap the other lines if i hit a pole or large rock. With the TI I almost cut through the wood and chip rocks and pavers. IT will cut the led yard lights in halve without trying. THat trimmer has way to much power!:weightlifter:
