Today I demoed a bladerunner mower, man what a HOT ROD! This mower is the king of speed I have never seen anything that will mow like this thing did, it's just a cutting machine. In fact I was so impressed with the machine I just cut him a check for a 60" machine. I will have to say that all the hype that you hear about them is true it is not a myth. I was hesitant when I first heard about them and I did a search here on lawnsite and read a lot pro's and con's about them but after mowing with it, it sold me.
Is there anyone else that has run one of these felt like they were in nascar? I do know that I could not run at high speed everywhere but were I could what a time saver! If you have not tried one of these I would recommend you to try one out if you are into production mowing.

....hmmmm...told ya so.....
glad you were sooo impressed, these mowers kick azz don't they...

how fast does this mower go?
captdevo
05-10-2002, 07:18 PM
ideal conditions, these will mow at 15+mph, ground speed on my demo is 18+mph.
if you can sit in the seat, you can mow, i'm putting some softer floatation type tires on mine to help absorb bumps.
if anyone gets a chance, they should demo one of these mowers.

The literature claims that they run 15mph.

How many yards and areas that all you people out there mow can actually handle more that 10-12 mph without bucking you off. I grew up in South Dakota and spent some time breaking horses, and in the midwest, unless you have 4 foot tall tires, I do not know of many yards that over 12 mph would be a consideration.
Great demo deal- if you can find a smooth yard with no night crawlers etc.
Thanks, Brad.

brad,
the big thing would be transport speed and being able to give a quality cut at 10-15mph.
not sure what you mean by nightcrawlers,
i have 25x12-12 rear tires and they do very well over bumps, once i add softer floatation tires 15mph mowing speed will be easily done and still give a great, quality cut.
tire size is a major factor as well as tire pressure.....
btw....how does the flex deck do on bumpy ground??

It does quit well - have not had anyone say they had to slow down because of it. I did notice that a commercial mower that bought one of the original decks which are archeic compared to the new ones and has been running it for 4 years now still is running it on a 72" JD Utility tractor - had it on a 955 now has it on a 4300. Just happened to be going thru town and saw it on his trailer. It would fit right in on any mower that can mow at 15 mph and still do the job at that speed.
Thanks, Brad

The high speed of a mower can also be used for other things like blowing off large parking lots instead of strapping on the back pack blower also like captndevo said it is great for transport!
btw why is it that most everyone thinks that if it does not say dixie chopper that it cant mow at that kind of speed? I have a flatlander and I can mow a lot of areas at top speed, so why can't another mower manufacture do it as well?
Flex-Deck
05-10-2002, 10:28 PM
Never thought about transportation, I usually have mine on a trailer - thanks for the enlightenment. I would be guilty of bias prior to investigation on this point and appreciate the input

With that kind of transport speed who needs to drive the truck and trailer from account to account?
Carry your trimmer and blower as you drive through town.
BTW I have looked at them and talked to Alex about a demo soon.

Does this thing have seat belts? What happens when someone is going 15 mph and hits a stump or burried pipe or post. Can you say law suit? I am sure any of the mower mfgs can get 15mph out of their rides if they wanted to , but why would they want to? Just a thought.

What happens when someone flips the mower and can't get off in time because of a seatbelt can you say lawsuit. Regardless of speed it all comes down to the operator of the machine and that can't be cotrolled by the manufacturer. I have a super z that does 15 miles per hour and I know that if I hit something or get hurt on the mower I am to blame and not hustler. There are some accounts that I have that I do cut at full speed but that is only because I am familiar with the account and it is level and on other accounts I cut at slower speeds because of bumps or obstacles. If you could sue a manufactorer because their product was to fast how many corvettes would chevy make, none because they would be bankrupt within a month.

Ah. That personal responsibility excuse only works until you say the word Employee. Don't beleive me, ask your Insurance man. Corvetts have seat belts, air bags and a little law called a speed limit to protect the manufacturer. Ever pay insurance for a vette? I am not familiar with the hustler, but assume that it has wrap around control sticks like most ztrs. Do you honestly think in a side roleover you would be able to get off the machine before it went over. I seriously doubt it. And I'm not sure you would want to. Since the other side has spinning blades. Oh yes I know about the safety switchs, but load that baby up with six blades and see how long it takes to spin down after you shut off blades. And I can personally attest that in a over backward roll you are going nowehere. Your body hangs on the sticks and you have no control of anything. In a high speed front crash you will fly forward, spin around the sticks and hit your head or back on the front of the mower, which I believe is steel. Im sure GMs lawyer bill for the year is larger than the value of hustler and bad boy put together. Is all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.

Mark 1grnlawn,
i see you're in central illinois, what town?
not sure why you would hit a stump.....
i walk over any place i've never mowed before...don't you?
heck, you could get hurt hitting something with a walkbehind.
i'm sure most will agree, fast mowers are not for everyone.
i surely would not let an in-experienced employee operate one, heck, i wouldn't even let them run one of my $12k Walkers till they got used to it on more open spaces.
but the fact still remains...time is money in this biz, and with the BladeRunner, you can give an exceptional cut .... quickly.
i'll post some pics this week of the quality cut i'm getting from mine.

Let's look at the high speed mowers on the market.
There is DIXIE CHOPPER
HUSTLER SUPER Z
AMERICAN BLADERUNNER
BAD BOY ETC.
Now all of these manufactures build there mowers with ground and mowing speeds controlled by the operator. It is not just 0-15mph mowing it is also 7,8,9 mph as well for the diffrent yards. As far as crashing in to things accidents do happen but most of the time it is operator error. I use a chopper flatlander and most of the time I can not use it's full speed capabilty but there are a few places that it really saves time, and like everyone said it is great for transport and various other things!
LAWNGODFATHER

Transport speed is great for lawn in a row or driving a few houses down to the next.
Personaly I will drive a mower on a lawn as fast as the lawn will allow me to let the mower go.
Wheather it is 5mph or 25mph if it can do i will use it.

Im with you LAWNGODFATHER, I go as fast as the yard allows. Whats this I hear about lifetime warranties on the pumps, if this is true I need to demo this mower immediatly.

it is on the left side, what's wrong with that?
FrankenScagMachines
05-14-2002, 10:47 PM
Yea, what's wrong about it being different? If it were on the right side, you'd say they are copying Dixie Chopper :D
As others have pointed out before, it makes it so you can see going against traffic along a road while throwing clippings in, but I'm sure there's other uses, just have not thought of them.

Good gosh a mighty
Build something that'll get some work done and all we here is how dangerous it is.
If ya can't drive it park it!
Have ya ever wondered why push mowers came out with the engine kill handle? If the story I heard is correct it's because some dumb azz pulled a running 21" into a tree with a rope to do some "pruning", I think he got pruned instead.......he sued the manufacturer because there was no safety switch or decal telling him he could/should not do this. Sad thing is I think he won. I have several places that I could run 20 mph if I had a mower that would do it. I would never, and don't ever, run wao on a new account until I know where all the holes and stumps are.......once I know I run it as fast as I can SAFELY run it.
Most accidents are caused by idiots that ain't got the sense of a lawnmower. If everybody was just a little honest when they did get hurt there would be a lot less suin' goin' on!
Bring one down here..........I'm ready to fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!:blob3:

What you have heard about six blades is actually stacked blades. Lots of people do this on various makes of mowers. This will tend to allow you to mow cleaner.

I'm with Homer, I don't run Z's, I'm just a former tobacco farmer currently working in electronics and really hoping to get into landscape work as soon as I can raise some money. Farm tractors - boy, those things can kill ya in a second. They're fast and the old ones I used never even heard of ROPS. That's because they built by IH in the fifties! I know of two young boys killed on them because they thought they knew more about discing land than the man who told them what to do. No lawsuits here, but that was back in the seventies before lawyers were allowed to advertise on TV and such. When I buy my first Z - I think it will be a Hustler Super Z, like ol #3 said, if you can't drive fast, wrap some kerosine rags around your ankles so the ants won't eat your candy a$$.

I myself am just now really learning to run a z mower. Have always used walkbehinds. Looks like this Bladerunner will be a nice and tough machine. Kind of reminds me of the 250 Quadracer my brother had only with a mowingdeck. Im sure the machine is safe it just needs to be used with common sense, just like the equipment we are all currently using.
