It's about that time to start thinking about skiing.

Dana, hopefully not too busy hocking packs to the mountaineers...
Les, book your flight now! The cheapies can be had early on...
Pete, join us, even if just for the night-life!

All else, come join this season, there is room for all!

A deal I've come across thus far. There will be more!

FourPass (http://www.skicolorado.com/fourpass.htm)

Some fun from last year!

Now you've done it. Now you've got the juices flowing again.
As soon as my head stops spinning here, I can think about it. I think things will be manageable again beginning of the week. Might need a beer run to FC to discuss this intriguing offer. :)

I had been thinking of getting that 4 Pass anyway. Winter Park was the balls. Best snow on that trip. No crowds.

I will be going to New Zealand in late February. So maybe January, early Feb?
I'd like to bring my #1 tech as well.

BTW - anyone have a contact for ski patrol, or outdoor equipment retailers? I'd like to talk with some ski patrol people about using these packs. Having the front pockets makes it convenient for carrying and using supplies without taking the packs off.

here is one of the packs, not really a pack for ski patrols, but we have smaller day packs as well.

not sure what you guys recomend for snow shoes.
My wife and I have Atlas. We do alot of hikes inside wooded areas.
We've only had them one season but so far so good. They have super easy bindings,
aircraft aluminum frame and will acomodate large board boots down to hiking shoes. They are very light and
are ideal for a pack trip.

The Summit County area has a lot to offer - Copper Mtn, Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin. And then not too far away is Winter Park, Loveland, and Vail. The deal on the pass that Matt mentioned is for Copper and WP. Good deal. it's about $140 for four days of lift tix. Single day tix are over $70. WP had the best snow, and no crowds.

Also last year we got a condo in Summit County. Worked out well. Drove there, stayed the night, went to Copper, stayed the night, went to WP, then drove to Steamboat. I think nixing Steamboat would be a good idea, and stay in the Summit area.

If set up properly, I can pick up guys at Denver International Airport, then we can drive up to Matt's, or drive straight to wherever we are going to stay. Input from anyone else wanting to go, will help us figure what dates and where we can find the best deals. I think TomTom would like to go, but I think he's been away from the site. He's spending a lot of time golfing :) Lucky man.

Awesome! Do you ski, or board? Like Dana, my favorite was Winter Park last year with Copper Mtn. a close second. Steamboat is a fun trip, but long, and expensive and somewhat crowded.

There will be more deals as the season opens up and gets to rolling. The FourPass looks pretty promising at this point!

I like those bindings. Ours cinch up quick like a zip tie, then pop the cam lock to remove. And they're built in WA.

This is what we have Atlas Back Country ("http://www.atlassnowshoe.com/product/bc24*)

A person will apreciate quick on/off binding styles when all layered up in bulky cold weathr clothing.

Looks like 149 on Southwest, AirTran at 109, each way.

Cant beat Southwest if your looking to travel and get there without hassle. If its first class and a long day of travel... Fly Usair or Delta or such.

Worst experience EVER on US AIR a couple weeks ago to MD.

Do tell. How was the trip with the new equipment?
I got to the gate for my flight, sat down. Boarding of a plane the same size as the southwest planes nextdoor took an hour. I watched two SW flights go from the gate next door in the same amount of time. It was like herding cattle. SLOWLY. Rude people, snobby first classers... Delayed flight all around, even at layover in Charlotte. Got there at any rate, but I discovered why people are so stressed when traveling. Ive never flown much of anything besides Frontier and SW, and they are both pretty slick!

Trip was pretty good. LONG. Made my pickup in Pennsylvania of the new quad. Truck seemed to drive pretty well. Idler pulley locked up somewhere near nowhere Ohio, fortunately near a small town. Threw the belt, stopped at the first place I saw just I started to overheat (both personally and vehicularly) and they had it fixed in about 15 minutes. Nice folk there... Made it home to the CO border to find the roads iced over and snowing. Arrived home at about 0415 to 5 inches of snow. A week later it was 82 again.

Truck is in the shop now, getting some needed repairs. Should make a decent service truck for a few years.

I like it. Just after the winter school break. During the week is my preference due to no crowds. I have been to Copper Mtn during winter break, on the weekend, and was able to get 3 runs, finally deciding to leave due to 40+ minute lift lines. Won't do it again. I might be in Mass. mid January.

Just think- You were the out of town trend setter last year. Would be cool to have as many people as possible.

Looking at condos and houses. Good deals, nice places can be had, especially middle of the week, mid season- non holiday.

I've been skiing since I was 6.
Most of my friends are all snowboarders so I have to stick to the snowparks a lot. Which is fine because I do do all the jumps/ rails and half pipes .

I haven't been to too many ski resorts, just the locals in washington

The best place I have gone to so far is Big White in Canada

You read my mind. If I can clear Raton, I'm home free. Oddly enough, I grew up in WA state, but never hit the hills; cross-country
skied in northern Michigan. Playing music and chasing girls took most of my time, but I became quite the surfer when I lived on the Oregon coast.

He hasn't found a job outside of Steamboat yet. Left Wagner Equipment, working another job.

WM is in CS Nov. 20 and 21. Windy just informed me she doesn't really feel like going. I'll see what other dates and venues are available and see if something works. I've been when it's a fun party type atmosphere, and also when it's been a boring lame show.

They haven't touched it for repair.

This area was 1 of 4 passes in this ski resort ( You may have heard of Alpental?)

2 years ago they got approved for a plan to re-design the area with new runs and chair lefts, I believe they haven't repaired this because they want to move forward with the new designs.

February 1st-6th or so... Plan to stay as long as you like. Probably ski Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and maybe Friday.

Last year, and it worked well, Dana picked Les up at the airport (DIA) and came to my place. We drove one vehicle, stayed in one condo, ate, drank and ski'd together.

I suggest we still take one vehicle, I am prepared to transport up to 14 of us, very comfortably, can do more. Rent a place either in-between where we ski or nearby one or the other. Small or big, they are doable, everyone can have a bed, and the more that join, the cheaper it is for each. I enjoy taking care of transportation and lodging, where we ski or stay is wide open. Consider me the cheap travel agent type.

My truck will take me and 4 comfortably, 5 if 4 are skinny and hold their breath. You get the most bang for your buck during the week. Airfare is cheaper (tiny bit), lodging as well. Less time in lift lines due to no crowds.

Problem with the 4 Pass you mentioned Matt, I don't know if they can buy online, and only for sale into part of Nov. I'll look around this week for some others.

Totally unrelated. Havent bought anything yet, but have access to it. Consider transportation an offering I can make, like last year! Not that others couldnt. Plus, you can drink in a bus!

For those flying, I remember that airfare was much cheaper on weekdays. I guess pilots don't like working weekends.

If we can plan the trip for the week that might be best for us tourists.

Definetly cheaper, all around, during the week. And fewer crowds. Given our industry, shouldn't be a problem for most.

I think, also, that it is four days at ONE resort, WP or Copper, not either. Looks like you can at least buy over the phone, if we go that route. Ive considered buying a season pass, but will wait to see what is best for the travelers.

Yeah.... I've driven through Louisiana before and made sure I ate in Texas beforehand.

Louisiana food is... horrifying. To say the least. I've only been to two third world countries in my life. Mississippi and Louisiana.

For those of you who don't know, in Louisiana they eat things that look like this:

You insult our cooking? Whats next my mother?

People come from all over the world to eat our food. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cajun_food

What do you Germans eat? A block of cheese and German Chocolate Cake?

Boiled Crawfish is the best! I can't wait for the season to come around.

Doesn't anybody on this site like Cajun Food?

My mother in law is 1/2 German, born & raised in MN.
All I can say is onions fix most everything.

As far as a sausage goes... I process my own from venison. Backstraps and tenderloins are the cats patoot, but very little gets made into burger or sausage. But when I do it's made from quality cuts. Even my jerky gets made from good roast and rib meat. I have 2 more packages then I'm out. Hopefully we'll have more soon..gotta love the natural renewable resources.

When you are starving, you will eat anything. Thats how it was for the early Cajuns. Personally I don't eat all the parts of a pig, but I do know of people who do. Never been to New Orleans, but think I might some day... the food is a unique blend of Cajun, Creole, Southern European and other immigrant influences, the most recent being southeast Asians and Mexicans (post-Katrina) from what Ive heard. My sources: my son did some volunteer rebuild work there and I heard a piece about the food influences on NPR.

Maybe we'll see some hybrid of menudo and gumbo come along soon... and crawfish tacos :-)

A place here in town called the Poor House Bistro offers up what are said to be authentic versions of everything from jambalaya, gumbo, mufaletta sandwiches, fried catfish and oysters and boiled crawfish (with all the right spices) to beignets and chicory coffee.... and live blues. Good stuff!

There's another restaurant in town that I haven't tried yet that serves a combo of Vietnamese and Cajun food.

I grew up eating things like tripe, beef tongue, oxtail stew, etc., so maybe that's why I'm a little adventurous, but for you guys that don't go near unfamiliar food... I have one thing to say.....

We continued the fun when I realized I had to work in the morning and had quite a drive back to Bogalusa. I walked out of the club and it was bright daylight, about six in the morning! Official is such a "strong" and conclusive term.

But yes, my opinion is that they are "official" dates. What days we actually ski should be further determined by what pass we get.

Arrive Saturday, Sunday, Monday? Ive got extra bedrooms for anyone that wants to come a little early or stay late. Head up the hill Monday afternoon to "the place". Ski Tuesday, Wed, Thur and maybe Friday. Down and out on Friday or Saturday or Sunday? Im flexible, whatever works for the travelers.

Matt - Argos mentioned Feb 2-6. The 2nd is a Tuesday of that week. There's always the possibility that if we can't get everybody in the same day, we stagger it a day or two. If some get in Monday, Matt can pick em up, and head to the slopes. Tuesday Fly ins I could pick up and then head to the slopes. What do you mean the carpooler can ski or work both days? No way anyone's going to go to the slopes on either of those days. Not practical. 2-4 hours to the resorts from DIA, depending on weather and traffic. Even more if lots of snow.

Ok let's start to narrow this a little. Unless we get some more input, we'll make a decision soon, and anyone wanting to come up after that has to go by the decisions made already.

Argos was thinking of coming in Tuesday Feb 2nd, and then flying back Saturday Feb. 6th. That gives us 3 good days in the mountains and on the slopes. It would be best to fly into DIA (Denver international Airport) sometime mid-day if possible. Also flying out of DIA late morning or mid-day as well, just to make sure we can get to the airport on time, due to it not being near the resorts or Matt's place if we stay there a night. DIA is on the FAR east side of Denver, and takes 2-4 hours to get to our possible resort areas around Summit County.

Another possibility, just to throw it out there Matt, would be for you and I to meet at DIA and drive straight to where ever we stay. Which would mean we could drive straight to DIA Saturday morning from the resort, leaving us another night to relax, drink, whatever at the slopes. Or do like last year, which is good too, and drive to Matt's Friday after being at the mountain, stay there Friday night and relax and drink, then go to DIA Saturday morning. Depends on how many people you and the wife want rummaging around your house. I promise not to steal anything this time

I've got ten on the yes or probably list and Argos is waiting for a confirmation to make reservations. I think we'll have 5-6, but hope everyone will make it in.

Well... Could be just about anything.

Where we are going in the high country around the ski resorts, You might hit the 30's during the day, on a warm sunny one at that. Nights are in the teens to below zero. Down on the plains at my place, we got down to -24 one time, and had a few weeks with the lows around zero or below. Not my idea of camping, but thats just me. Oh, and there could be snow on the ground on the plains (Denver and surrounding area) and will be MANY feet of snow on the ground anywhere up in the mountains.
