View Full Version : Bad news, Big Brother is watching

I got into a really ugly and heated argument last night between my Dad and my brother over the content in my YouTube video's.
My brother demanded I remove 1 of my vids that showed me casting burnt debris and concrete into a hole to bury it.
He told me he doesn't want people to see that kind of work and "have people come after him and ruin his reputation".
So I told him he his getting paranoid and he seems to really encourage me to put his work up on YouTube as it's good free advertising. And I told him that there are 10 other videos depicting "garbage burial", things like concrete and mud and rocks, just crap that isn't worth hauling away to a land fill.
He then got furious and told me if I didn't remove those videos, he didn't want me to work for him anymore, and no more cameras.
I told him forget it because that is my content and my hard work went into editing those videos, and he knew 100% of what was in those videos from the start, and now he is getting paranoid.
So like the cry baby he was (as I remember him when we were kids) he tells my Dad and then my Dad uses a whole bunch of foul language and tells me if I don't remove EVERYTHING on my YouTube page including all pictures related to anything that is posted there, I will be out on my ass with nothing, and I will be done with the family business.
So as of now, no more video's unless it's my own content, nothing of my brother's equipment, (new or used) no more interesting demo jobs, no more posting of any pictures related to his work that I do with him.
I do not know if he has visited this site yet, I'm sure if he did, he would fire me right now as there are some major pictures of work from the past 2 years that he won't like.
I also have to delete all videos and pictures with his excavators and dozer and trucks that have been on jobs that I have either visited or worked on.
If I do not comply with the instructions, I lose my job and I will be forced to sell my truck, trailer and skidsteer to afford another job and living situation.
The sucky part is I am a YouTube partner, if I close my account, I lose the money I made, so I will have to keep only the video related to my business and keep anything else private viewing only.
I will ask the moderators of this forum to delete my work picture thread and I will delete all 3 of my Photobucket albums.
It kills me to do this, but this is what happens when you mix family politics and business together.
If you are on my YouTube subscriber/friend list, you can expect a video telling you in better detail and future plans of what will happen now, I will have to distance myself from my brother more in the next few years, I can't keep working for him.

It sucks and sorry to hear that you guys are fighting.
I see his point of veiw and it is one reason I am very cautious about pictures on a public forum much less videos.

Man that just Sucks
I have enjoyed lurking around watching your vids.
But I do see your Families view point and I'm afraid they do have a legit concern given todays Laws and Litigation.
With the intrusion of cameras/video, what was once done privately is now more public and when your operating on the border line with the regs well you don't need the crap or headaches that can be brought down on one's company because of a video or picture.
Even that silo/barn demo I'm sure may contravene some "worker safety" regs that "could" be held against the business.
Mend the fence, drop the vids and keep the job....as much as it Sucks

That sucks Ron, I guess I can see some points but they are going a little overboard. You probably are getting more exposure(good) that they realize.
Hang in there.

Geez, there is nothing wrong with burying concrete and other debris as long as it isn't "garbage". He should relax a little. Texas has a fairly tough environmental code and they have signed off on that practice when the material isn't hazardous. Your brother shouldn't have anything to worry about. I would worry more about a Canadian OSHA type organization nitpicking safety procedures rather than what you do with rubble but hey, it's his company. I think you guys need to hug and make up..
I liked the vids and think they were a cheap form of good advertising and good publicity. I didn't see anything negative..

It took this long to have a blow out in the familly
Hey it happens I can't work with my dad either my brother and I argue too.
I was wondering what happened to your page.
Ohwell let things cool off a bit and then its time for you to get out of the familly business.
I think your brother and dad are forgetting that they have a operator that works any time and they can get away with a little more with you.

Well this really sucks Ron. I've enjoyed watching and following your picture thread as well. Personally I'd make all your videos private before deleting them all, same with the photobucket stuff, if you don't tell them the passwords they don't know its there. I'm sure things will calm down but until then that would probably be the best thing to do. I've been in the same situation was you with the videos, like everyone, I'm sure we've all done some things that don't need to be videotaped. My boss has politely asked me to not video something or take pics of something I comply. As long as I don't waste over a couple of minutes taking a video he is just fine and dandy with me taking videos and pictures. He follows and watches my stuff on youtube. If I ever had to take my stuff off youtube I'd be pissed, cause at the moment I'm making damn good money in the partner program.
Life sucks but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. hope it all works out for you cheif.
Sorry to hear that Ron; it's been a great ride.... looks like it's just you, us and Mr Bunny from now on.

Ron that last vid of the silo demo was incredible IMO, and its a shame to loose content like that, but I do see where your brother is coming from... Too bad.
Just keep a low profile for a bit on the vid front and it will work itself out:)
So I think its time to offer you and gravel Rat a job in the city, you know "good cop" bad cop", one guy to do the work, another guy to whine about the conditions and rain:laugh:

I was not there at the "deal" and of course there is alot more going on than you can post. My take is a little different here......First, from what I see, you are an employee of the family business and to protect the business is the first priority inspite of our individual interests. I would have to agree with your brother that the removal of the trash burial video's is a smart/prudent idea and a reasonable request. Now, you guys have a heated argument, family dynamics enter and because everyone is hot........you have to remove everything........that is just not reasonable and is emotionally driven. I would revisit the discussion with calmer heads and reach a happy medium. I have watched a bunch of your You-Tubes and have found them to be professional, informative and educational - they have helped me help myself watching your style to improve my style and improve my cycle times and efficiency. I often get caught up thinking "this stuff" just stays here among "us", but that is far from the truth and not the reality. This medium is far reaching and you never know who or what is lurking out there and what this information can be twisted into. I hope you and your family can reach a happy medium where egos will be balanced and you all can express yourselves in a way that is good for you and good for the family business......compromise is the word that comes to mind. Good luck amigo.
I'm with RockSet. Don't delete them quite yet. Revisit it with cooler heads. My cousin is the same way, you never can do anything without him b!tch!ing about it...
It's a good thing you've never had to work in a prison or a Procter & Gamble plant with your need for the video fix rooni.

I have to agree with your family as much as it hurts to take down your work. You really don't know who is watching. People in authority show up when you least expect them. Also, I don't think anyone has touched the idea that there may be someone with a grudge, just looking to turn you in. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.

Just a bit of an update, it's still quiet here, no one has brought up the discussion, I removed all of the earlier vids that I started making back in September, I will re-upload them in one shot and keep them private for a while.
My brother phoned me on Friday afternoon, no apology, that was to be expected.
He said that he watched some of the newest videos and didn't like one of them called "the ditch b*tch is back", he didn't like the one word, he knows why I am called that, but he just doesn't have the sense of humour that others like myself have.
Another video he didn't like was Episode #3 of "flying skidsteer", it shows me dumping buckets of solid manure along a ditch, but if you looked closer, you can see there is a 4x5 foot soil berm I built around the ditch to protect it from run off, not a big deal.
He kept telling me I need to be more careful of what I upload, but I wasn't going to argue, I won't be linking him to anymore videos, or telling him I made any video of anything I did, and I will just have to keep the new vids private for awhile, then set them for public.
I always take 100% responsibility for anything I post, I don't upload a bunch of crap, I won't show garbage like dead animals being buried or oil spills or even anything remotely considered dumb and dangerous.
I almost deleted my account entirely, but a day after setting most of the vids to private, I looked at my AdSense account, and my daily income dropped 90%, so I have to keep the older and higher viewed vids public.
So for the time being, I am back, but in incognito, low profile mode.
I took the time to do an account enquire on my skid steer (finally got that system figured out) and I can do an early pay out next year, got some prices on rebuilding my jack hammer (not going to happen) so I will focus on that for now as Ma & Pa are now talking about selling this place for next year and I need to get my finances in order before I move somewhere.

I think your brother is getting worried things are starting to get tight work wise and he doesn't want to have any of the competition to have any ammunition against him. If the competition sees something on your vids they can use that against him.
It is a dog eat dog market now and there is probably lots of contractors that would like to get your brothers work.
There is probably something bugging your brother and this was just a tip off the edge. Either he has some competition that is beating him in prices or somebody has said something to him.
Anyway you slice it familly should never work together PERIOD it never works it is just like having a business partner. There is always tension and somebody is going to snap.
As for yourself the problem I see is your dad loaned you the money for the equipment. Now I would be trying to get a bank loan and paying your dad off.
Didn't you say your dad is deep in debt so it might be time to cut the rope you don't want to go down with his sinking ship.
Not to say I told you so but you should have considered that muni job when you had the chance.

I have to disagree. While working with family members has its own set of challenges, I think a family business can be both rewarding financially and build stronger relationships at the same time. I have been hard pressed to find loyalty outside of family ties. As long as each family member knows his or her role, works up to expectations, and doesn't take advantage of the situation, a family business can run smooth. I think a lot has to do with the dynamics of the family and personalities involved.

Myself I have seen it too many times no just me but other people I know, father and son or brothers shouldn't work together. Start fighting things get ugly and it can stay that way for years.
I'am not surprised what happened with Ron and his brother it was going to happen.

My brother and I never got along really well, I am the black sheep in the family, he's got the most power of all siblings, money and the most say in what happens, so the rest of the family typically took his side.

Just think of it this way atleast you don't have a job that you wish you had a heart attack so you can kick the bucket.
I had a screaming match the other day with my familly it was about my job. They said you have no choice there isn't anything else out there for work.
With my job
You can't get sick if you are knocking on deaths door you still have to go the gov't doesn't want to hire relief employees.
Can't be late for work if you are your in trouble.
Your expected to take work home and do it at home without pay.
You can't take any days off except for your alloted time off.
The rotational shift work is hard on your body you never get used to it. Always sleep deprived.
You do the same thing day in day out nothing really changes it is BORING.
You have no life with the job I have they control it. Like I said you can't get sick so that adds stress, you can't be late that adds stress. The managers add more job stress on you. Not uncommon for employees to have stress related problems.
You get very b*tchy and irritable and if somebody says something the wrong way you snap. After work I usually don't want to talk to anybody just sit and clear my head.
Ohwell that is the life of having a gov't job. One day I will be like the other employees having heart problems, ulcers, strokes etc. I'am wishing for a heart attack
The job controls your life you have no say in it. Do I want to go to work today no but I have to. Can I call in sick no because they don't want to pay another employee over time to replace me.
Enough rambling

Something that I forgot to add.
I always wonder how many places that the Dirty Jobs Show tapes at get visits from inspectors afterwards. Way too many problems with confined spaces, inhalation hazards, exposed machinery drives, etc., etc. not to get notice. Our main line of work would definitely qualify, but I would never invite that kind of attention. You're just asking to get shut down. In particular the charcoal episode comes to mind.

Hmmm, some serious incongruities with your statement(s) above and the general direction of your usual rants.
You generally indicate that the area in which you live is economically depressed and remote from the western coast (tourist areas) of Canada.
You've worked in some of the biggest sh*t holes for paltry compensation and that you can barely walk at the end of the day due to your previous employment.
How is it then that you've met hundreds of tourists all over the world? Which local tourist attraction draws them in for your region? Generally, tourist based economies are above average in dollars spent on landscaping and general appearance for the city proper, and yet your local economy is in the crapper and may just be geriatric in its bent. Had a lemonade stand on the side of the road that draws them in for free?
If you can afford to see them on their terms, where have you traveled? Are you fluent in many languages? The foreign populace (and a good portion of the Canadian emigrants) are preponderantly Asian (gleaned from my visits)-walked that Great Wall and had some good conversations about the US and its socioeconomic and foreign policy discussions? Been a lot of asian haranguing on the local square about how the US is filled with cowboys that understand nothing of polite discourse and gentle inquiry?
Please, do tell about your wide, ranging travels across the earth where you have these insightful conversations.

GR not too wise when you make this non sence comments ,whats bothering you ? that you weren't born int he USA? or at least you don't live here?
Come on man if I was a Canadian ,I would't be to proud to have you as a fellow country man .
I wasn't born here but I'll give my life for this country any time and even help to defend your own .
I've always been proud to be an American ,and every where I go I talk highly about this country and the neighboring Canada and have a lot of friends from Canada that do the same and they can never thank the good old USA enough for been such a good neighbor .
But if they read this kind of stupid comments you make they will hunt you down and make sure they teach you a good lesson ,but again knowing the kind of failure winning liberal that you are they probably would not waste their time on you .

Lets put it this way I DO NOT share the same feelings as the tourists that I talk too. So don't get angry at me I'am just telling you what they say to me.
Alot of tourists from Germany and overseas. I usually walk away when the tourist start ranting the langauge isn't always the best.
You hear the "F" word rude people in the USA. Even have alot of American tourist say people are alot more friendly in Canada than back at home.
Anyhow like I said I don't share the same feelings I just hear about it. Some of the german tourist start foaming at the mouth and flailing arms :dizzy:
As for the China comment after I read in the paper that China wants the USA to be number 1 trading partner. It said that once China controls selling vehicals to the USA they will have total control.
Then reading that the USA owes China well over 700 billion dollars and it is climbing they have the US by the arm.
Now why does that concern the people of Canada. For one nothing will be North American made anymore. What about quality built vehicals, manufacturing in North America will drop off.
Things like steel production if it disapears from Eastern Canada and Eastern USA.
The hardest hit in this province is paper production you will see China take over the USA paper mills and control the woods. China is the largest buyer of paper. China also is a large buyer of wood you will probably see them take over the lumber supply in the USA too.
Maybe it isn't in the news in the USA what China is up to.
Right now another 500 people are out of jobs because the USA is supplying paper to the overseas market cheaper. The overseas market wants controll of the paper production in the USA.
They will eventually convince Obama to sell raw logs from the USA to China. Your mills in the USA can't produce the cutting spec's the overseas market wants. They want metric dimension wood even B.C. mills have troubles with that.
Ignore me if you want but your guys buddy Obama is selling your country out.

Like I said I have no beefs or anything bad to say about anybody here.
I'am involved in the resource industry so it makes a person worried that China has their eyes on the USA. You know what they are after they can't get it cheaper out of Canada now they are looking at the USA. Because Obama is desparate to do anything you will see your raw resources head overseas and say good bye to the jobs.

I'm not really sure how everyone thinks Walmart sells Chinese junk. It's the same stuff you can buy anywhere else, for less money. The same Fruit of the Loom boxers, socks, laundry detergent, Japanese electronics, everything is the same product that you can buy elsewhere. I will say that some of the clothing they sell is probably made in Malaysia or China, but hell, what clothing ISN'T made overseas anymore? Hardly anything, regardless of where you buy it. I'm all about an American product, however Walmart isn't selling an entire store full of Chinese crap. Anyone who says otherwise is naive as all hell. Go in there, have a look around, it's the same stuff only cheaper.
