hi i found this truck online. its a 1993 international 4000. what im looking to find out is how are these trucks? how many miles do they last? this one has about 460,000 on it. are they reliable? it would be used for mulch/dirt/gravel etc. is this even worth looking at? i emailed to guy for a price but he hasnt gotten back to me yet.

i bet he wants 8.5k for it. he probably paid over 3 for that bed. its not just the motor all the rest of the truck is worn to.

this true. what do you think its worth. in my mind its 16 years old, half a million miles, and proabably worked pretty decently. i have seen many of these trucks with boxes on them with 120k for 5ish and a few years newer

lets say you get it for 5. you will surly dump a quick 5 into it just getting it back up and trusty/roadworthy. 10 grand can buy you one heck of a nice truck in todays market. i say keep looking if he wants more then three,
I think an IH dump is worth it's weight in gold.
Check the vin number and see if it's been rebuilt. The DT466 is one of the best engines out there. It is also very reasonable to rebuild and work on.
Here is our 04 IH 4300. It was a POD's truck with 180k on it. The frame was cut down and axle moved forward. Then I installed a hoist and old Army bed.
Sometimes the bed will also cost more than the truck.

I appreciate all of your responses but I forgot to add that the truck is in road worthy condition as we speak it is legal with inspection, plates, and everything else needed. I was originally looking for like a 3500/f350 dump but cam across this and I figured that this would be a better truck to money value, but wasn't completely sure that's why I posted it on here. If the truck was completely beat and looked horrible and seemed abused I wouldn't have even email him. But the truck seems to be very well taken care of. He still hasn't gotten back to me yet about a price. I should hear from him soon though.
Assuming lets say hes asking 4ish for it as that's about my budget at the moment what would you guys do?
Thanks again all!

I really like that set up! Wish I had the money to do something like this!

Well just got off the phone with the guy. Hes looking to get about $7,500.00. Truck has the original motor WITHOUT a rebuild and I believe he said original tranny too. Big NO in my book. Maybe if it had 1/4 of the miles lol

The truck was a lot of work. I sure wish I had the money like some of the big boys to just sign a check for truck with hoist.
I like to find a truck that was not worked hard, then turn it into a real work truck. Kind of like buying a work truck that was never a plow truck.
This was after I put the hoist on, and hinge.
I never knew an Army bed was so light, and narrow.

Yeah looks good! Did you do all the work yourself?

I did not cut the 3/4" flat steal that that boxes the rear frame. A local shop has a few made up already. I ordered my hoist from them, and they make up the rear hinge. Every thing else was done by me.
To do it over again I don't think I would use an Army bed. I had to put a more braces, and cutting than I wanted for the upper hoist to fit.
Sorry to hijack this thread.

Well I have to say it defiantly looks good! And the truck was way out of my budget and wasn't even worth what he was asking anyway! Lol So no need to be sorry

That price is way too steep! Original motor and tranny would not worry me too much though. You have the correct thinking with your offer.

Thanks I appreciate you saying that. And yeah the truck just had too many miles on it for what he was asking. Although I will say that the outside seemed to be in great shape. Not sure about the inside though because I didnt see any pictures. All I heard was $7,500.00 and 400k + miles lol

check pike out here is the link they have about 4000 peices of equipment.

there stuff is super maintained I worked for them for 5 years and they have teams that just drive around the country to change fluids. Im not sure what they are wanting for them but I bet they are reasonable. The dt466 has plenty more miles left in it with only 420k this is not even comparable to any engine that comes in medium duty trucks. I believe you can rebuild one cylinder at a time on these and the head is individual sections as well.
