I have a 2006 52 fastrack, bought new and mowed about 80 hrs in less than a year. I needed to "top" off several times, and probably used a half quart of oil before the year end. I have read that kohlers burned oil and that is normal for the first year or so. Is this "break" in or what on these engines? Please share your exp. on this engine. It is used for residential, and other than the before mentioned has been a great mower. I recently added some fusions and they cut much better than the stocks. I mostly cut fescue and crabgrass here in middle TN.

Kohler distributors tell us all the time that it is normal for a Kohler to burn 1 ounce of oil per hour.
That being said, I am the type of guy that checks the oil on my mower and "toys" just about every time I use them, and I would certainly top it off each time.

Thanks, PJ

I always check it before I mow and it seemed to always drop a little. I usually mow around two hours per session. "An ounce per hour" is probably more than what i burn, so i guess it is ok. This is my first kohler and it just seems weird to burn oil on a new engine!

I have got a 23 Kohler Command Pro and it really doesn't use much oil at all. Best of luck.

I have the same engine with TONS of time on it. I use very little oil but I do things different than most. It works for me. I dont add oil if its close to time for a change. I just go ahead and changs it. I dont add unless it says add. ( I have been hearing more and more about large oil consumption on mowers that are kept FULL) I change oil every appox 50 hours. I use 10W30 Spring and Fall. Straight 30 when temps stay over 75-80. This is what works for me and I have 4 Kohlers and WILL NOT OWN A FOREIGN BRAND OF ENGINE!! Sorry PJ just my 2 cents!
