I am trying to come up with something to use to help advertise my business at events such as Earth day type functions. I want it to be more than just a cardboard sign and handing out business cards so I have come up with an idea of a more interactive type situation.

I am thinking of taking a 6X12 open trailer, stripping it to the bones and making a true living lawn out of it. Then people could come up, visit the table I have set up and look check out my company. I am sure it would draw attention and all.

A few questions:

I was thinking the soil would be about 6" deep. Here in GA I would like to have a zoysia lawn on it. Is 6" deep enough? I think it should be for the application. I have figured that a 6X12 trailer would hold about 36 cubic feet of soil at 6 inches which comes to about 3200 lbs. With a tandem trailer with two 3500lb axels I don't see that being a problem. All other materials added to it shouldn't be that much weight and while being stored it would basically just be the base steel and soil.

Do you see any other issues or concerns with a project like this?

Cutting the grass might get a little tricky, haha. But that would really get catch peoples attention

I thought of that... it will be a relatively small area, and when it is empty it should be clean, no objects to have to work around. I am planning on putting a few removable stairs on one side and so a ramp would be formed as well to assist with mowers and other equipment being carted up there. I am also curious on how to ensure that the ground stays solid to hold the proper equipment.

So, what do you feel would be the best way of approaching the subsurface?

My thoughts...

A wire mesh type base.
Some sort of landscape fabric that will allow water to run through but not soil
Mix of clay/topsoil some how packed down, maybe just a vibrator plate or something like what is used for paving stones.
Would you put down any gravel or sand underneath? I figure with it being open I would not have to worry too much about drainage but rather retaining water long enough for it to be useful. But proper soil conditions should solve this problem I would think.

I think all the grass and dirt would bounce everywhere.

I got some input from another friend, he brought up the idea of just bringing in the little bit of sod needed to do the specific events. This would make since it would seem as it would be a minor cost in sod, and then the wood deck would be more widely suitable for other functions where the customers would not be coming up on the trailer itself such as movie nights and local concerts.
