to an extent it is a waste but when it is your family in the car infront of those trucks or even your truck dont you want to know they will stop and not kill who is in the car in front of you?? It was meant to be a good thing they do go a little over board like $350 for a light being out but over all they are good things

Nope was driving my car. They usually do it on Thursdays and I don't go that way then on that day.

That sucks for all those guys that didn't pass. You never see anything like that down here, and DOT does not mess with you.

I did see a D6 dozer on an aluminum flatbed semi trailer parked in a weigh station with DOT all around. That looked unsafe to me.

I didn't realize they setup at the super flea! Is that about the normal amount of trucks they take out of service at a typical stop? I'm always worried about finding a DOT stop.

I often see them at the Walmart lot on Niagara Falls Blvd and the vacant lot at Sheridan and Bailey in Amherst.

No one should be worried about DOT. The only reason to worry is if you have something to hide. Your truck should be in safe, working order every day, if not it should be parked and repaired. Lights, brake controllers, tires, inspection stickers etc. should all be taken care of, not overlooked. If your always so worried that DOT is going to stop you and find something, maybe you should take a minute and find it before they do.

Thats my two cents for the day.....

I've noticed an increase of DOT or Commercial Vehicle Enforcement here locally. The one city has gotten so bad that no one wants to drive through the town. I check everything before I leave in the morning and make sure I properly secure my load, but even I do not want to go through this town. I have a friend who works for this paticular police department and he said that the DOT officer will find something to ticket you for. It is not if he'll pull you over, but when and he will ticket you for something.

I thought the police were to protect and serve, not to generate revenue. Anyways, I guess we all have to bend over a little farther now that tax revenue has dropped

In Buffalo area. They do checks every couple of weeks there.

You are right.
But the problem is ,instead of them helping you they try and nail you.

ex. If you were pulled into the inspection site and you had a strap over your mower the wrong way .Instead of giving you a tix they should show you how to do correctly bind it.
ex. Same thing. pulled over and they ask if you have any hazardous material on your truck and you say no and they see a gallon of gas another tix.

They generate too much money a gas can missing a vent or not tied down with rope $350 trailer break away both tires have to lock up or you are out of service never a warning just the ticket. Also there r noe 30 day passes I got pulled over 4 days in a row and waste almost 1 hour in line and no tickets with 3 guys getting paid to sit there it costs me money. Like I said earlier it has good intentions but they abuse the power and the working guy has to pay for it. They should hire more people to drive around and heavily ticket or mpund equipment for people who work with out a liscen or insurance sorry but there are many things wrong with making the honest workers pay more

No kidding. That stuff is checked every morning before I leave the shop - my license and livelihood are at stake. However, I have never been through a stop before and by all accounts I've read in this thread, they are not fun nor do you seem to get out of them without any tickets -regardless of how well you manage your equipment. So, perhaps you can understand my concern.

wow waste of money

are you stupid or just plain ******ed?

trust me their is no waste of money going on, try generation of tens of thousands of dollars per day.

waste of money would be 3 state troopers eating breakfast on the clock, ten officers cheeking for child seat belts, coper taking a nap under the shade tree.

I owned and drove a semi truck for 6 years. These things are a pain, but well worth it in my opinion. I was always scared of Vehicle Enforcement, even though I never once had a ticket for anything but logbook violations/multiple logbooks/stupidity. However, I've seen more than my fair share of trucks, both 18 wheelers and smaller commercial vehicles like our lawn trucks, put out of service for being unsafe. It is a pain to the drivers, because most of them aren't responsible for the maintenance on a company-owned truck, but it does help keep the companies responsible.

If it keeps me safer when I'm out on the road, or keeps my family safer, I'm all for the checkpoints. That being said, yes, they do take the authority a little too far sometimes and use it to make money and not promote safety. Its a fine line our government must walk to serve the people and not seem "bad". Theirs is not a job I'd want.

The way the DOT regs are written is... confusing. To say the least. A lot of it is left up to interpretation by the enforcing officer. Heck you could take a brand new truck straight off the lot to a DOT check point and the officer could find something to shut it down for.

For example I run 26K tags on my 1 tons. Got weighed and I was over the GVWR of the truck, but under the 26K tag limits. So I was illegal and legal at the same time. Tell me the rules aren't jacked up the way they're written. What a mess.

I almost feel bad for the cops that have to enforce the soup sandwich that passes for a code book.

DOT stops are the worse and your usually on the side of the road for at least two hours at the minimum. An example of this I used to run a wood recycling yard and I was coming back to the yard empty and they pulled me over and did the inspection and they gave me a ticket for having my automatic tarp system not tied down ! Yeah I know pathetic and he didnt care and was not a nice guy

Dont even get me started on DOT.

Its gone well beyond its original intention of keeping safe truck on the road.

They might as well just stand at the checkpoint with a cash register. Thats all it is now.
