Just wondering about how many miles for an oil change in a 1993 7.3 liter non turbo diesel??

Usually 3000-4000 miles on a old IDI and use the Powerstroke oil filter it has the same threads as a IDI filter but the 7.3 PSD filter holds more oil and filters more.

What ever you do don't buy a orange POS ie FRAM they are the worst filter on the market.

Ok thanks. So just buy the standard ford filter?? I changed it with the ford oil i think it was like 15-40?? Then i had to put a fram filter on because that is all my local parts store had.

The 7.3 PSD Filter is the same diameter same threads as a 7.3 IDI filter but the PSD filter is longer. The motorcraft oil is good I would use motorcraft or luberfiner filters. I would buy filters online it is cheaper that way.

I wouldn't worry about seeing the oil turning black quickly the old IDIs are real carbon producers so your oil will be black in a week

Keep it changed regulary because the oil does get loaded up with soot.

3-4K in a diesel? That's how often I change my gas engines. If I run synthetics in my gas engines I'll drive 20K between oil changes running top of the line Amsoil 0W30. Amsoil makes a few different diesel synthetic grades. I'd check them out. You should be able to easily go 8K on a mid level synthetic, and a full synthetic you could probably shoot for 15K with miles to spare.

The engine is a IDI International using synthetics on it is a waste of money because synthetic oil loads up with soot just as bad as dino oil.

The 7.3 IDIs burn dirty so the oil takes some abuse.

Gravel rat is right. Also you can have the oil check for carbon levels and adjust your oil changes that way. It is worth it. I ended up changing my mercedes diesel about every 5000k miles. My 96 7.3 about every 8000k and my 6.0 about 10000k with the analysis. Using motor craft 15w40 or chevron delco 15w40. The shell stuff is good to. I also only use motor craft filters but the auto stores here carry them on the shelf.
