The last one you can't tell how big the pile is till you look at the 2500 dodge to the side of it.

I can confirm, that was one hell of a pile! and it was packed in with a leaf plow so its smaller than it should be. Wish I had pics from this weekend, did a 28 acre camp. Some crazy big piles.

This is not at a homeowners lawn, but the pile that has accumulated behind our shop. These pictures do not do the size of the pile much justice... will try and get some more tomorrow before we start hauling it to the dump.

This pic is a few years old. The pile is much longer now than can be seen. All the leaves were collected by a single 5-7 man crew.
We dump mostly whole leaves on one end and try to turn the pile over a few times a year. The other end is rich dark compost that we run through a dirt shredder to remove the junk. Some gets sold as compost and some gets mixed with topsoil and sold that way.

we actually feed livestock day to day for the most part . we charge $1.00 per dump to different farmers and it feeds their cows and pay for us hauling the grass. the only grass we compost at the main offie is dirty !!

Why are you hauling them to the dump? You should think about selling as compost. Just turn the piles ever couple months. Dump grass and lime on it too.

Well I guess I'm gonna have to take some pics of our New Pile.

we started out with the smaller 6.5 bushels going for .50 per dump and we tracked the total dumps we got in the day . and when we upgraded to the 9.5 we just kept the same price and recalculated the price per and then inflated the price after we had a demand .

Just curious.... if you guys dump leaves at facilities that compost them for reuse (& maybe for resale?), or if in your area there's no facility like that, or if you do something else altogether with them?

Hey! This could be a good poll Q!

XLS
12-07-2009, 09:52 AM
depending on which business location i am refering to they do it all ,most of the guys compost the leaves, some towns offer city dump grounds where they compost to resale , and in some places our guys/families just have the land and ditches to dump in
all of our clean grass is sold to farmers at a per load fee
dirty grass is just composted with the leaves.

the guys who compost on site use the ammendments in reworking beds to filling holes in lawns .
it depends on the locations.

Yeah, that's one of two irresponsible methods I thought I might see posted!
Around here guys do this a lot in ditch lines, etc.
And massive storm runoff water will pull leaf debris from these ditches into creeks & eventually into larger streams & eventually, rivers & man-made lakes.
And even if they don't make it that far, leaves will combine with other limbs & other trash to plug up culverts, causing unnecessary flooding of roadways.
Leaf debris is just one of many types of sediment that are annually dredged out of navigable waterways & multi-use reservoirs, costing US taxpayers hundreds of millions of $'s!!

But obviously, as proven by your post, a certain % of this influx of sediment could be prevented by the use of more COMMON SENSE:
Instead of "dumping in ditches", contractors with any type of environmental ethic whatsoever should be staging leaves etc in areas where they can't be washed area, and ideally can be layered upon each other through time & turned over again & again to create decent heal-in material for nursery stock, and eventually workable compost.

It's not my or anyone else's "need", XLS.
It just makes sense to make more contractors everywhere more AWARE of it.

Leaf erosion of this gross magnitude into waterways is a problem contractors everywhere may not be so much aware of.
So why not use lawnsite to spread the word a little bit?

If you feel I used you as an incorrect example, I apologize. :waving:
In the wording you used, it came off to me as though "your guys" could easily be dumping leaves down watershed hillsides directly toward creek beds.

And XLS, as far as "saving the world" is concerned, if all of the world's people individually began to use more common sense & concentrate on our own back yards 1st and foremost, wouldn't most environmental issues eventually fall by the wayside?
That's the heart & soul behind the environmental slogan: "Think Globally. Act Locally."
