I went by my rental property yesterday and was checking the irrigation system. Zone 1 works fine, I changed it to zone 2 and zone 1 came on again. I tried moving the zone 2 wire to zone three and get the same thing. It works fine if I manually turn it on, but cannot get it to work from the controller. Should I be looking at the controller or the valve & wiring?

Got a master valve on the system?

I would check the controller first. Easiest thing to do. If controller is okay you've got wiring issues.

You are saying that you get no activating from zones 2 and 3 ? Do all 3 zones share a common?

There are only two zones. Zone 1 is the only one working from the controller, even if I move the zone 2 wire to the zone 3 position.... zone 1 is the only one that works. Oh and zone 1 comes on when I try to run zone 2 or when I move the zone 2 wire to the third spot. Zone 1 comes on when any zone is activated.

Is this a new property? Or has it worked fine to this point? The wires may have the insulation rubbed off and causing a problem. Or they might be wired wrong in the valve box.

Verify the functionality of the controller first.

It has worked fine for two years and I was just told that zone 2 for the backyard wasn't coming on. I can move zone 1 to a emty zone and see if I get the same thing.

Swap zone 2 and zone 1 wires and see what happens.

If you don't know how to use a multimeter to check the controller with, pick up the phone and hire a professional.

Try what; call a pro or get the VOM out? If it's possible you can run a meter, check back with us, we know some numbers.

What kind of controller is it? Brand and model!
Have you taken zone 1 out and put zone 2 wire into zone 1's port? Does it fire on?
Are you sure you are you are turning the controller on manually correctly? There are some controllers ( ESP SI) that even if you turn the dial to your desired station and press manual start it will start on zone 1.
