What is the make, model, series of this valve? I think it is a Toro. It is black plastic, 1-1/2", w flow control. Bleeder centered atop flow control. FIPT with stainless steel bands. Solenoid is slightly offset. Bonnet is secured with Phillips screws.

You got me.....If it is a Toro sounds like the 252 series.

I agree with Peter, if it is a Toro, it's definitely a 252 series valve.

Since when does the 252 have the solenoid off-center?

Since forever...

It ain't........You're wrong.......... go deal with it.

I never installed the 1-1/2 inch 252, so if the solenoid location isn't on the centerline, I never noticed. Obviously, the 1-inch version is centered.

Nice start. This is good for you.

Shall we revisit the seven head question? :)

....and a lovely valve it is, too. Don't they have the Toro name molded in?

Yep... the Toro 250 / 252 series. The most miserable piece of $hit valve ever made by any company. And yes, I'll even put it ahead of the Hardie 700 series!

They aren't too horrible, but they suck when winterizing with a small truckmount compressor.

dan,

i removed 12 of these, none in boxes direct buried in the ground.

replaced them with rain birds (this time in boxes) re routed some mains and rewired the system 8 yrs ago, went back once to post an as built in the pumphouse. haven't heard from the owners since.

hey now Dan...I cut my teeth on the TORO 252. He may be ugly but he's my brother kind of thing.

Do the 1-1/2 inch ones take forever to close when manually opened? (like the one-inch ones do)

I just have bad experiences with them from when I worked for an irrigation supply house when I was in High school. Home Owners had a knack for stripping out the screw holes in the body and loosing the solenoid spring and plunger.

I've also torn dozens of them out of sites because the bodies tend to crack. Frequently and in random locations I might add..... I just think that there are better valves for the money. I'd install a Hunter product before a 250 series Toro and y'all all know how much I dislike Hunter products!

Only if they haven't been adjusted but I think the consensus answer would be yes.

They also have a lot of pressure loss for a valve. Once you learned all its idiosyncrasies it separated the wheat from the chaff in service work. I carried all the parts to repair them.

I always wondered why the one-inch one used a urethane diaphragm.

I don't really care for them either. I'll rebuild them if the lateral piping is going to be a real pain to reconnect to a new valve but if I can replace them without too much effort, I prefer to install a PGA. I mainly see them at commercial sites in 1 1/2" and 2" varieties and the screw holes in the valve bodies do have a tendancy to strip out VERY easily.

boots, this solenoid came from the valve in the earlier pictures, it was cracked but tested at (21) with my multi meter.

i decided that since it was cracked i'd tear it down for a closer look.

i turned the solenoid on and off and retested it, all tore up and it still worked

why then, when it was in operation, with everything testing good wouldn't the friggin thing work.

when i was called to replace this system everything checked out fine but the solenoids would not operate. new solenoids would work from the clock telling you that the wiring was good, the valves worked manually and with the station master.

now after tearing this solenoid down i wonder why solenoids go bad? i know why but look at the damage i did and it still retracted.

22 is about as low as it goes with a solenoid, a trashed solenoid will show o.k. until it heats up, then fails.

Is that like the Richdel 205? I used to buy the diaphrams and solenoids in big bags every week. That valve has brought me a lot of money over the years.

funny how some of those old solenoids can be rusted all to hell and still work fine. I kind of wish that the Richdel/Irritrol valves still used a potted solenoid.
