View Full Version : Leaf loader blowing oil

Need some help. I have a Billy Goat leaf loader that is giving me problems. First, it was nearly impossible to pull the start rope. Checked the oil and it was overfilled (my bad). Drained the oil to the right level. Now I can start it...but it is blowing white smoke and spewing black oil out the muffler. And I mean alot of oil. It also soaked the air filter with oil. And it was also leaking gas from the carb.
I ran it without the air filter so I could see what was going on with the carb. It looked like it was dumping oily gas into the carb.
Ive bought new plugs, new air filter, and drained the oil to the right level. Whats my next move? Do I need to drain all the gas and replace it? Do I need to remove the muffler and clean it? Do I need to remove the carb and clean it?
Could really use some advice. Here are the numbers:
Billy Goat loader: HTR 1602V
And by the way...happy Thanksgiving!
16hp Briggs Vanguard: Model 303442 Type 1277 E1

Nah, that's a Briggs engine, right?
They all do that when you overfill them, happened to me thinking it took 2 quarts as well.
Just remove the air filter and clean it best you can on the intake part,
then run it Wide open until it clears up, probably have to let it run 15-20 minutes,
maybe 1/2 hour until the entire thing gets hot enough to burn off the excess.
She'll smoke a bit, for a while...
And you might have to reduce the throttle in between, too, like if it starts to acting like it's cutting off.
Might keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case the muffler goes up in flames, but I never do.
Now if it doesn't clear up you might have blown a seal, but that usually leaks out other places.
Anyhow...
Should be good after that, but I've also noticed these Briggs engines don't seem to enjoy running
on anything but nice flat surfaces, mine smokes half the time just when I use the blower on an incline.
Usually it's annoying but it's just oil, nothing serious other than it likes to foul the plug and dirty the air filter.

Thanks Topsites. When I ran it today...it was blowing enough smoke that I was afraid the fire dept was gonna stop by! Is that normal until it burns off? Also, it kept spewing oil out the muffler.

And it was also leaking gas from the carb.
Sounds like the problem is the float valve didn't close fully and filled the crankcase with oil.
You can remove just the top of the carb and clean the float bowl area out, I would suggest replacing the float needle valve while it's apart. Also replace the fuel filter and check the tank for trash.
Change the oil to remove the fuel from the crankcase, Once all the above is done crank it up and let it run. After a little bit the oil will burn out of the muffler and the smoking will stop.

Just stand there and watch it smoke like I do......

Update: Did just what you guys said this morning...Changed the oil and it was FULL of gasoline. Cleaned the float bowl..new fuel filter, new oil filter, new spark plugs. Fired up on the first pull...smoked for a couple of minutes and ran great.
Thanks for the help guys!

i had the same problem with mine. make sure you turn the gas off before driving around because all the bumping around on the truck can result in the needle in the carb staying down and the gas gets into the crankcase
