For guys that are running laptops or netbooks in your truck, where did you get the mounting bracket for it?

First things first, ALWAYS back up your data!

Stick-on strips of Velcro, same thing that holds my GPS to the dash, for myself that
stuff works way better than all those stupid dang brackets which just get stucked
on there anyhow lol

The strips hold the computer to the fan stand, then the stand to the cab's interior.

That and it's cheap, I bought a pack with more than a few strips at my local Advance Auto parts store,
home improvement stores might carry the sticky strips as well, can't recall exactly how much it was but
under $10 I'm pretty sure, definitely below $20, probably in the 5 dollar range.

Be aware a lot of these portable pc's have hard-drives with MOVING parts!
They do sell HDD's that are completely solid but they're pricey, however HDD's with moving parts
are considerably more prone to failure when exposed to repeated movement / vibration / shock.

So first things first, ALWAYS back up your data!

I don't really need it for data storage on the netbook.

I log into my desktop (server) remotely, it's the internet access that I want it for, as well as the larger screen for radar purposes for snowplowing.

I'm thinking that for now I may go the velcro route, and then just replace said strips when the strips get too dirty to hold anything again.

I can't find anyone, anywhere that has had used an actual bracket before.

I did want to mention, I have mine on the center console of the bucket seats,
really the biggest concern was it sliding off, the velcros hold it in place.
Other than comfort of use is just one of those things, it's not very
comfortable but I'm also not into spending dang near as much as what the
computer cost just on a bracket, even if it does swivel nicely and all of that.

As for the problem with the HDD, I just wanted to mention it because after
mine gently slid off the passenger side seat onto the floor board...
It didn't hit hard, it was inside a carrying case and it slid onto a bunch of
stacked trash which it really landed softly my cellular has fallen way
harder and it's not that I drop them on purpose but it still works just fine.
The netbook however, nothing worked anymore, it wouldn't even boot, no BIOS access,
I couldn't get as far as a screen blip, only thing it did was 1-2 LED's lit up...

Good thing the warranty department helped me out this time, oddly enough
the HDD did not need replacing but it was in this process I found out about
this and thought I'd mention it, should a HDD ever go bad it might be a good
idea to replace it with a good one (that has no moving parts inside).

I log into my desktop (server) remotely, it's the internet access that I want it for, as well as the larger screen for radar purposes for snowplowing.

Wifi sure is nice, pull up Mapquest most anywhere, I keep certain files like pdf repair and parts
and owner's manuals on this tiny little USB stick so I can order a part when I know I need it,
saved me many a trip and phone call to dealers, don't even have to leave the truck for that,
plus I can check stocks during lunch break LOL

Anyhow...

Definitely secure that POS some kind of way.

I have mine mounted in my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Jotto Desk. I really like this mount. Real easy on and off setup. and also in and out of the truck. It gets right where I want it and it can also be used from the passenger seat. I use a Dell 15" computer. -Jason

I was thinking of building my own mount. I was thinking of squared up angle iron cradle of sorts. Have a post of sorts mounted to side of center console with means to adjust height and angle.

I am still in the plotting phase.

Look at the one Mike posted. I believe that one is made of 1" black pipe as the base. then all you have to do is get a union and a bunch of different sizes of pipes and elbows and you can make it go where ever you want it. -Jason

I am a Police Officer and mow part-time about 45 residential a week. I have a Jotto Desk in my patrol car and in my personal truck. I use to have an inexpensive mount and absoulutely swear by the Jotto Desk. As oppose to the single support it has two additional supports to stabalize the computer so it moves less. Also has a screen support to keep the screen from flopping around. The other thing that I like is that it is vented where the laptop sits unlike the one in the link above. I believe the Jotto Desk would allow the laptop to remain cooler.

No help for the OP but I'll be watching this thread and I'm going to look at the Jotto Desk mentioned above.

This is what I'm hoping for. I think it will be much better than trying to use the smartphone or Blackberry.
