View Full Version : Multiple Stuck Valves ?????

I installed a system back in May of this year using RB DVF 1" valves. There are 11 zones. The system is on a shallow well.

I went there today on a service call and found that no matter which zone I turned on; zones 2, 3, and 4 also tried to come up and obviously there was not enough pressure to run all 4 zones. It is a Hunter Pro-C timer. I pulled the second module in the timer which eliminated zone 4 but it still tried to come up when I turned on another zone.

So, it appears to be "stuck open" valves. Is it common to have 3 out of 11 valves stick open this soon? I do not know the quality of the well water. If the problem is "dirty water," is there some type of in-line filter that can be put at the pump?

To my knowledge, the mainline has not be damaged since installation so I do not think there is dirt, mud, etc. in the mainline.

I am going back tomorrow and am just looking for some advise here before I do.

Thanks / Regards,

Mex

open up the valves and start looking. It is not uncommon for multiple valves to be stuck when it's running off a well.

and yes, there are many types of filters you can install on the main line.

Most of the time when I have had valves stuck open or opening with every other zone I have found debris in the valve that was preventing it from closing when its scheduled watering time was done. Clear the debris and it would then operate normally.

Is there a master valve ( im assuming so) If so , dont touch the clock , open the master valve manualy. See what happens. It would appear you have shat in those valves and probably building up in all of them.

There is no master valve.

There is a ball valve on the discharge line at the pump. With it open, it is only pumping 15 PSI. If I close it, it builds quickly to 50 PSI. I only ran it for a few seconds since there is no pressure switch. It is on a PSR.

Would letting it build up to 50 PSI and then quickly opening the ball valve accomplish what you are suggesting?

Thanks for trying to help this novice!

Yank one zone wire and turn that zone on, this will put juice to the clock without sending juice to a valve. your answer will be in there.

wasn't this discussed a while back?

i can hear fimco saying in his sleep

"isolate the problem"

electricity or hydraulic?

examine the water coming out of heads valves...get it in a bucket..
make observations..

its simple..

Oh, the sprinkler system problems I've encountered in dreams........

I'm with ya. You can only fix a crappy system so many times in one dream.....

Or the altercations I have with customers in my dreams. Too bad I can't record it on video. Very funny stuff.

...and toss his cookies on your new sofa?

I don't much dream about conversations with customers, but if I did, I'd kind of like them to go like the following.....

That is absolutely hilarious. I am book marking that site.
Damn, I could add to his list or stories/confrontations with customers.
Good stuff.

As suspected, real fine sand in the valves. Washed them out good....they work like new!

Now, assuming this is a dirty water problem, my irrigation supplier recommended a Vu-Flow Filter with 100 mesh. Any thoughts / suggestions on this filter or any other one?

My plan of action: (Suggestions welcomed!)

In stall a filter
program in a delay between zones (I assume I can do this with a Pro-C. I have not yet looked to see.)
Open and clean all 11 valves

Thanks again for everyone's help / regards,

Mex

If you're pulling sand, something is wrong with the application.

is this a jet pump or a submersible?

This is my game plan at the condo in Colorado.

I hope Matt doesn't put down much for the cleaning deposit.

I would probably, at minimum, install an electric valve on the filter and program it for one minute to flush out the filter before the irrigation comes on.

This is a 1 HP shallow well jet pump.

100 mesh is a standard of straining that should safeguard the system. In olden days of classy brass, one might have opted to just blow the sand right through the system.

I've never had problems with a reverse flow valve. That being said, the guy is pumping too much out of the well.

with dial in run position , press and hold the - key , while holding it in turn dial to set station run times. Delay will appear.
