I'm looking at an 01 F250 Diesel 4x4 with the 7.3 tomorrow afternoon. Body is a little rough, only has 112,000 kilometers, and has the 5spd manual transmission. Price seems right, I'll likely repaint it because its black and is scratched up a bit, but owner says mechanically it is mint. Just thought wanted to know if I should specifically look for anything with this truck.

Speed shift the trans to see if it grinds. Oil Leaks! Oil pan rusting. U joints since its a manual.

As long as he doesn't say those 112K are all highway driven by his grandma, it might be worth while if the price is right. I'd have a look through his maintenance history as well. The transmission, transfer case and axles should all have been serviced at least once in the last 40K.

Its a 6spd actually, L, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. 01 weak points were the auto trans which you obviously dont need to worry about, and some had Turbo and oil issues. Pull an oasis report to see what was dont under warranty. Otherwise theyre great trucks. 99-03 7.3's were some great strokers. How bout some pics? I had a 01 and loved it. It was black as well. The power and speed wasnt great, but even under a load it was just as fast. Very weird. Seemed to get real good fuel mileage as well. The 6 spd is also a semi bad thing because a lot of trans shops wont touch them. Theyll want you to just replace it. But yeh do those things.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I could get it for 8500, which around here, is more than a steal of a deal, as long as the truck starts and rolls a few inches.. Heres a pic TXNS

That is a steal at that price too bad it has the small mirrors. My brother bought a truck that looks almost like that one except it is a F-350 srw.

I cant beleive it only has 112,000 kilometers on it I guess it wasn't driven much.

An 01' F-250 Reg Cab 4x4 w/ the 7.3 Powerstroke and a 6 speed manual transmission with only 70k miles for $8500? Go for it, that's not a deal it's a steal. I have an 01' Excursion w/ the 7.3 that has 103k miles and it's been a great vehicle.

You are obviously clueless about 7.3 powerstrokes...

Just got her home!! I was impressed when I saw it, very little rust, fairly clean, and drove better than I expected. I have a list of things I'm planning to do the next few weeks including, 02-04 style headlights, new paint job, tint windows, obviously safety the truck, might need new brake controller, and I'm debating new, bigger tires. Tires on it are good shape now, but I'll see what I can get for them. Only complaint is that the truck is slower than I expected. Will likely look into chipping it soon.

Yeh the 01's were slower for some reason..but when you tow, it performs the exact same. theyre very torqy. screw the 02-04 HL, get the 05's! Im happy for ya!! Post some pics!

Thanks TXNS! Glad to hear its torquey at least! Do you recommend putting a chip in it? And I'd consider putting the 05+ lights in.. we'll see yet.. I was gonna take a pic tonight, but it was dark by the time I came home already, but I'll try getting one tomorrow.

What kind did you get? Do you need any other mods along with it, or is it ok to just add 50 hp?

SCT. thats a real good one. I put a predator on mine. But i dont recommend them because they will hurt your engine. Bullydog is another real good one.

The thing about the 02 - 04 headlights though is that they're basically plug and play. Other than needing an add on wiring harness (I believe), it's just a matter of putting in the new housings. With the 05+ lights you have to do some grinding/trimming, but while it's minimal, its still additional work. Either way they're a lot better than the stock 01' offerings.

Here is a somewhat cleaned up picture of the truck! I was gonna paint it right away, but might wait till there's more snow on the ground so that I dont have much else to do anyways!

That truck was a great find, you planning on keeping your current truck or selling it now that you have this one?

Thanks, I'm happy with it so far! I sold my truck yesterday already.. for more than what I bought it for a year and a half ago, so cant complain! I think I'm gonna wait till after I paint the truck to tint just so I dont have to worry about scratching the tint in the process. I'll likely wait till after christmas, when things slow down, to really start working on the truck.

Thanks again y'all. Found a used programmer.. a Superchips 1705 Max Micro Tuner...any good? Also, when releasing the clutch pedal to go into gear at idle, something makes a bit of a grinding noise, only at very low rpms tho.. is that normal?

Gravel Rat
12-08-2009, 11:45 PM
Yes it is normal to get some growling from the transmission it is from the gear chatter. That truck may have a aftermarket single mass flywheel so you are hearing gear rollover noise. You will know its a dual mass flywheel if the clutch pedal feels heavy.

the superchips programmer is ok. would suggest gauges to monitor egt and boost first. and for custom tunes i suggest dp-tuner.com. And thedieselgarage.com has lots of helpful folks for all your questions.

Merry Christmas to all! We've got pretty nasty weather for Christmas day especially being Canada! Woke up to ice rain, and now its just pouring rain! Just wanted to put an updated pic of the truck. I tinted the windows about two weeks ago, and actually added a Superchips tuner to it too - what a difference, no shortage of power!
