Ya thats what happens when your working on rock its common sense to know what your doing. Obviously that guy didn't. You ALWAYS have some dirt under the tracks. Steel on bare rock is like a tire on ice slippery as sh!t.
I have a feeling this is something to do with Kiewit on the private power projects they have had a few of these little accidents.

holy **** that was scary to watch. I am not sure how the camera man was not running down there to try to help the operator out. I did hear something at the end that sounded like someone screaming but I didn't know if it would be the operator or someone at the bottom of the hill maybe. The door was even open on the machine.

I don't know how much a seat belt would have done. Plus he wasn't even smart enough to close the door.
How many people have been in a 465 sized excavator and done at least one full barrel roll (maybe it was two) and lived to tell about it. If it was that guy screaming he should be thankful he can stilll scream. Imagine 65 tons on top of that little cab.:nono: I will bet that space got real small.

How would he have had time to close the door? I can guarantee that he would have been killed had he not had a seat belt on, hard to walk away from being ejected from the cab and having the machine land on you. Functional seat belts increase your chances for survival in a roll over by an astronomical amount.

That is a good reason why bush road builders do not use excavators with standard tracks. When your working in those kinds of conditions you need 2 bar grousers with ice picks welded to the tracks.
Notice once the machine started to slide it started to gain momentum there isn't much you can do because standard 3 bar grousers have no traction.

the door isnt gonna save your life :nono: the ROPS is meant to take the weight of the machine if it was to rollover , plus on this rollover the boom would have taken alot of the weight as it rolled over......BUT with this one it doesnt help that the direction it rolled , the first thing hitting the ground was the cab, then to do it all over again thats when the cab strength becomes questionable
