I believe it's illegal to use #2 diesel for that purpose.

if you get caught using off road fuel on the road in california the fines are huge, the state can also make you pay the estamated taxes for the miles on your odometer.
reg gas $2.80 diesel well over $3.00

Looks like Washington, California and New York have it the worst.

Is/was that C.O.D. price?
I know you work further east end, not sure where your home is located. Try Cookes, Mackie or Above All. Not sure if they all will deliver past Riverhead.

I realize that it's illegal, however, it is tempting when times get tight. I know that the state can test your vehicle for off-road but have never heard it's actually been done. Maybe one of those laws that aren't enforced.
here in Indiana they just layed off 42 DOT officers. Less checkers.

From what I understand the red dye stains the fuel system components. If you take the truck in for service, and they see that you have used off road diesel, you will possibly be turned in to the authorities.
In other words, DON'T DO IT!

More then once I have had to fight back the temptation to put a gallon or two of red diesel in the truck so I could get to the gas station. Whether it is a myth or not my understanding is that even a one time gallon or two permanently marks the system.
ok i have been here lol the guys knew no better and they was fuelng the truck with the mowers so they used the same diesel ............. i found out first hand
lol it dont matter if it stains the engine , all they do is run a hose down the tank and pump up about 6 oz i guess and if it is clear your good if not............... well we all know this .
i had told a guy in a town the mower used offroad and then later he ask the crew about the truck fuel and they said we fill it up when we top the mower off. enough said
the state prevents the mixing here at stations by having the two fuels seperated and they record the #2 pump and its on camra . I know a guy running it though he has dual factory tanks and in his bed he put an aluminum tank, he had the bottom taped into the line between the pump and engine and he just closes off the factory tanks and run the #2 when they checked it was always the factory tanks . one day they ask a guy about fueling the truck up and he said yeah about once a week we fill the one in the bed up ................busted . he no longer drives diesel's

as things get tighter you'll see a lot of things you don't usually see, happening.
when we get really bored i'll tell about today!!!!!!!
this is what happens in this area, loggin trucks run off road in 1 tank, taxed fuel in the other. the d.o.t. requires that a hand valve on the outside of the drivers compartment, unreachable from the cab, be installed for the switch over.
some of these guys drive 2-300 miles off road every day, bunch of money saved if done correctly.
for years marvel mystery oil has been used as an additive to regular diesel, marvel or atf will both turn the fuel red.
they have a gauge to go buy not sure of the results but they was sure ugly about it
