View Full Version : Double blade kit/mulch question

I'm interested in setting my 1548 up to mulch and wanted to get some additional information on how to best achieve this. My dealer told me that I probably wouldn't need the "mulch kit" option if I went ahead and did the double blade install. I still would like to know how the mulch kit attaches to the deck. A couple of questions. Does the kit enable each blade to have separate baffles? Can I use the double blade kit to mulch or are there different blades recommended for the actual kit? I appologize for all the questions, but I want to get all the info I can before I decide what to do. What is the retail $ of the mulch kit.

The mulching kit does provide separate baffles for each chamber. The kit includes mulching blades so you don't need to purchase mulching blades.

As for the double blade kit and being able to mulch with it, I would not use them as there is no baffle to block off the discharge chute. You can however use the double blade kit with the mulching kit attached, however you will notice that the double blade kit does take some horsepower to run.

Part # for the mulching kit is 788034 and the list price is $127.00.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have any pictures of the mulch kit? Also, If I went the rout of the double blade kit instead of the full mulch kit, will there really be a need for the dedicated mulch kit? I'm assuming by having a high lift/gator blade setup would make for quite fine clippings being discharged. TIA

As you mentioned, the clippings are much finer with the gator & high lift. You still get a fare amount of clipping being discharged though. One big advantage of the double blades is its ability to cut and discharge wet grass. I was mowing in MO. a month a go when it was raining and no clogging or balling up.

I'm in the process of getting pictures for our web site, therefore I will try and send them to you ASAP.

Thanks for the info Dan, I'm solely using my mower for my house only. I usually cut every 3 days or so to keep on top of the growth. There are times, however, that it goes a bit longer and I end up cutting high grass. How well does the kit work in higher grass? Would you go the route of the double blade kit or mulch kit? Also, if I do the mulch kit, will it interrupt those beautiful lines this mower lays down? :D

Thanks again,

To be totally honest, I do not know if the mulching kit will effect the striping ability. As far as the kit working with tall grass, it should preform just fine.

I think I can answer your question. #1 The double blade kit is excellent. You really do not need a mulch kit with the double blade kt. It cuts the grass so fine with/ without the mulch kit. If it were me, I would not waste the extra money to get the mulch kit as the doulbe blades are amazing (actually the only think I liked on my two 2002 gravelys.) I think you also asked about a proslide with a gear drive (in a sperate post). Combo just does not work. If striping is what you want to do, check out bigleaguelawns.com I am not associated with him, just received my striping kit yesterday and it lays amazing stripes. Hope this helps.
