My Cub Cadet 147; I think it's a 1971, has an ignition switch problem. I have to use starting fluid to start it and once it's running, I can't let go of the key or it will shut itself off.

After it's been running with me holding the key to the right, I let go, it shuts off, and I can't re-start it with the key although it does turn over.

Help?????

It runs great. I just cleaned a bee (and parts) out of the fuel line, no problem there. Also cleaned, re-built & re-set the carbureator.

Check all your wiring for loose or broken connections, and I would double check your grounding points. Could also be your ignition switch. Good Luck

Let's see, '71-'81=10 '81-'91=10 '91-'01=10 '01-'10=10...10+10+10+10= 40 years old, I would think that a new Ignition switch might be in order. At least price wise, that's the First thing I would do, it can't hurt, and it's cheap enough.

Just guessing but I think this is likely an old Kohler with automotive type coil and breaker points. Would also bet it has a "generator-starter" combination that is belt driven but regardless, if it has an automotive coil then you need to check that you have 12 volts to the positive terminal on the coil when the ignition switch is in the "run" position. You could have a bad switch or just a bad wire on the switch.Check for a burned or corroded wire on the switch . If you can access the back of the switch you can test the switch itself for continuity in the run position as well as the start position.Just my half-fast opinion. Hope it will help.

check the anti-backfire solenoid fuel shut-off at bottom of carb bowl should feel it click when switch is turned on if you dont feel a click check for 12 volts and check the ground some have one wire and the short ground wire runs to some where on block

Those old Cub Cadets with the starter generator you'd have to crank @ low throttle position when cold & slowly push the throttle up & the engine would eventually start, but eventually quit. You'd try again until you could get the engine running. You'd have to find that sweet spot in the throttle position to get it to run. Then came along the quiet line 1000-1650 & the starters had more torgue to spin the engine & it would start easier. So, bottom line, make sure ignition system is in good shape & adjust timing & carburetor to be at it's peak & then you'll just have to live with it, because it just doesn't really get any better, it's just a good ole Cub Cadet that'll that'll be around another 40 years while the new ones are dead & gone - forgotten.
