2009 was plagued with poor weather conditions in my region from the get go and my power raking, aerating, and spring cleanups suffered to unreal lows because we were hit with heavy snow storms and freezing up until early May and was cool most of the summer which caused grass to grow plenty slow and many customers had me mowing every other week. Then as a result of theose late freezes almost 40% of the trees didn't even grow leaves this year so leaf cleanup was a total joke. To top it off the economy big scare got everyone and the grandma out mowing for peanuts. I got discouraged for awhile and considered getting a day. I watched jobs postings closely for the last three months and realized I have to stick with this because I would starve to death on most of those wages. I just sealed the deal on lightly used Exmark TT to add to my fleet and I reviewed some of the gaps in my own operation and I'm more eager than ever to hit this coming season like runaway train. Sitting around the house like this drives me crazy. Snow removal is only about 3 times a month here so I find myself way too bored. How is the rest of you doing?

If it isn't already done. I fight boredom by refurbishing equipment. Replace fuel, hydraulic and air filters on trucks and all equipment, grease and lubricate everything possible, and change fluids in everything possible, and spark plugs. Sharpen and balance. Tune-ups. Then paint everything possible.
Then I write and get printed seasonal newsletters for next year. Also take soil samples for a few soil tests.
Of course you could:
address envelopes for letters to prospective customers in neighborhoods you like. Get them all ready--mail on the best date to make new sales in yur town next spring.
knock on doors and try to sell customers in advance, dropping off brochure and your card and talking in person whenever possible. Measure area with steel tape or special snow-capable measuring wheel. Dig down to identify grass type and take a soil sample.

bored here too. Snow usually keeps us busy for the day before and after the actual storm (when we get it). Thankfully my g/f got me a PS3 for x-mas, so the past couple days that's kept me occupied lol. Got some work in the shop to do, but haven't gotten to that yet lol.

Just got everything back in order from our last snow storm. Garage was a mess and I am now already trying to get stuff ready for next spring. Plan on trying to expand more this year since I hired someone and also mid way through the season i plan on hiring someone else.

Just finished up my last fal clean up I had on the schedule. So pretty much from now untill the end of Feb I will be out hitting the advertising hard as wel as working on getting company logo stuff set up. My first round of t-shirts will be here next week. If i like the way they come out I will order some hoodies hats and a few jackets, as well as 2010 Christmas gifts for custoemrs.
I do have a few tree jobs lined up to keep my guys busy. Im hoping I can pick up a bunch of flower bed and mulch work in the next few weeks.

You are lucky to have work run that long in the year. Hear the ground is frozen solid from end of Oct. to April. Get maybe 16 mows a year per place plus cleanups. Doesn't snow enough to keep all that busy with snow removal.
