Recently had a $400 chainsaw stolen from our maintenance building. From all indications this was done by a certain employee but unable to prove it. A few suggestions that might help eliminate this happening to anyone else:

1. Keep an inventory record of all your equipment (serial numbers, price paid, model #, etc.) Since we had the serial #, the police are linked to a database of all area pawn shops and were able to notify/check with them about this being stolen.
2. Mark all equipment with an engraver in several locations (housings, shafts, bars, individual pieces, etc.)
3. Mark all your equipment with some sort of unique painted letters/name etc. that stand out. A thief may think twice about taking something that is marked like a billboard.

Having to put a lot of stuff under lock and key now. Learning through the "school of hard knocks" is not much fun. A word to the wise is sufficient.

An employee like that would be down the road for me. Talk to the police and see if they can go talk to the guy.
