65 Hoss wants to know what the best 21"er is?
Also What is the best car to pull a trailer with?
JimLewis

The best 21"er is a Murray push mower with a mulching blade and a 4.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine. Those things just kick!
As for cars, several will do. A real man drives a truck, like an El Camino. But I prefer a 1980 Chevy Camaro with custom Metallic Blue paint. That's the setup!

uh...a trailer? What if you don't have a bumper to hook up the trailer to?? Won't a murray fit in the trunk of a camero with the handle bars sticking out? Yep..and a can of gas. Put the weedeater in the back seat with a broom and it will all fit.
Actually...I saw that very same thing just the other day only the Camero was two tone bright yellow and rust. Guy was mowing a commercial property.

Exactly! Why waste the money on a trailer? That's the perfect setup.
All these other LCOs are out there wasting money on fancy schmantzy mowers, fancy schmantzy trucks and other fancy schmantzy equipment. All you really need is a used $50 mower, a hand edger, and a broom. Low overhead. That's the way to go.
Trust me, I know. ;)

So I should trade my truck in for a comaro?
Anyone know where I can find one?
Do I have to push that Murry?

That looks like the perfect set up.

Jim, I must disagree. A '79 LTD is a better pulling car.

Are you sure that 4.5 HP is the way to go?
I prefer the 3.5 HP with the blades not having been sharpened since........................... I guess nobody knows when.

What about Central Park?
Will a top wind start be better than the pull cord?
Also will an Eldardo/elcomino type do it?
Should I get a 3 window Pinto with the fish bowl one in back if I get a pinto?

LMAO, LMAO
I think a Subaru brat, or chevy luv, or ford courier would fit pretty good with the elcamino.
I love this thread. :p

Arround here the pro's are using the wagon (early 80's).
Much more storage. I bet you could even strap the old homelite down on the lugage rack.
With a few minor adjustments, you could probably even put a plow on!
I just wish I would have started the right way.

The other day while I was working on one of my lawns, this scruffy lookin guy pulls up across the street in an old beat up datsun truck and pulls out a Murray push mower and a homelite trimmer and starts to work on the yard across from me, He has stick on lettering and numbers like you get from office depot on the side of the truck .... Quality Yard mowing, $20.00 per hour,
PH:XXX_XXXX. Now, I give the owner of that home an estimate of $38.00 to mow and trim edge and blow clean..... two weeks ago, I guess I didn't get it:D Anyhow, This guy is watching me as I'm tooling around my customers lawn and he comes over to talk to to me, so this guy procedes to tell me he's been mowing lawns for ten years and yada yada, and ask me what I paid for my mower, I politely tell him around $5000 bucks, and around $800 for the lawnboy, so he looks at me and says( I kid you not)
I would never pay over $200 for a lawn mower, especially those commercial mowers, my mower is just as good as those, then he says with great pride, I'm gettin $20 bucks for that job and it'll only take an hour..... So I politely tell him that I'm getting $38 bucks for my yard and it only takes me 30 minutes and I'm sitting down...... He looks at me stunned, and then walks off. Well, Just as I was loading up to leave he comes over and ask me if I was hiring:rolleyes: He sure would like to work for someone with such nice equipment. I think he got the hint that his idea of saving money on mowers is actually costing him money..... I don't know how the guy could of survived for ten years at $20.00 per hour.

Okay -- since we're on the subject of deadbeats!!!
Got a guy who says that he isn't trying to take any of our business -- in one of the mobile home parks where we mow. He's supposed to be a friend of ours......
Anyway, he buys a Murray rider about two years ago and starts to mow lawns.
This year, I tell him that his lawns are looking pretty shabby. We change to sharp blades every day. Does he????
He looks at me with this look. You know the one!!!
Then he asks MY husband to help him take the deck out from under HIS stinking macine.
Then he looks at his blades. Dull as can be!!! He says, "I haven't sharpened these since I got the mower!"
We don't believe he is operating with a license, or that he pays taxes or has insurance. We are soooooooooo tempted to turn him in to the county. But his wife is a nice lady and puts up with him. She IS a good friend of mine. She just doesn't know what to do about him! He is what we have heard mentioned as a scrub or black market lawn service.
He's holding down a full time job (6 days a week) and trying to do these lawns on Saturday. In the summer, he's so tired all the time and he is not very nice to his wife! Really upsets me a lot.
I should never have told him -- but I got sick of seeing his lawns look like they were chewed! Hindsight -- I should have kept my mouth SHUT!
Even with sharp blades, he's still a deadbeat!!! Sorry -- had to vent! It is late and I'm tired and I'm really tired of this guy!

This would be a cool piece of equipment to go along with the 3.5 HP Murray, and the Chevy luv pick up. Would fit very well with the whole program.

Nelson,
Chill out, dude. The thread was designed to poke fun at ME and my humble beginnings. I actually did start out with my 4.5 hp Murray Push mower and a broom. I've told that story a few times here and so they were being specific to me.
If it hits too close to home, don't feel bad. Some of us have had very humble beginnings. It's just nice when we can change where we started from and make something of ourselves then go back and laugh about it.

My dad and I used everything from a beatup chevy luv, old datsun, to the best of all a '79 Ford LTD with a trailer hitch. We pulled a 5x8 trailer with a garden tractor and push mower on it. All the trimmers, edger, gas cans, etc squeezed in wherever possible. We thought we were really cool when the trailer was turned into a tilt.
If this hits to close to home, just use it as a spring board to get going. Most of us started at some point with humble (ok, maybe embarrassing) beginnings.

That is TRUE! My husband started mowing lawns as a favor for friends and family going back up north for the summer -- Snowbirds! He drove around in my little red Plymouth Sundance with the little push mower sticking out the back!!! He only did about 4 lawns then. That was more than 7 years ago. We got serious when we realized how hard it is to do and learned to respect the profession very quickly. Soonthereafter, we got a trailer, little zero turn mower and a little Nissan truck (which we found out soon had a hard time pulling our trailer). We upgraded to a Dodge 1500 in November 2000.
We've all had our humble beginnings!

How do you think your employees would react if they read your reply about going to the cabin while they have to work on July 4th??????

Well, first of all, all but one of my employees don't have computers, internet or know how to read english well enough to read what I wrote.
Second, even if they did, chances are very slim they'd ever find this site or what I wrote.
Third, my employees know very well what I do in my spare time, when and where I go on vacation, etc. They are all fine with it. They all want as many hours as possible and they remind me of that whenever their hours get below 45 in a week.
Fourth, they care more about having Cinco De Mayo off than they do 4th of July. But most of them don't even ask for that day off either.
Fifth, my employees get a fair amount of leisure time as well. I'll take them out on a boat or a day of jet skiing (all on the clock) once in a while just as a reward.
Finally, each of my employees get 1 week paid vacation each year and another 4 paid holidays during the winter. They are fairly happy with the arrangement.

First this thread was started as a joke. We are all so busy this time of year. And overheated to. Its nice to have some lighthearted fun with guys like Hoss, godfather , Jim and others.Hey Jim you for one dont need to explain yourself about the 4th or any other matter. You are a pro.We all have had humble beginings. I became hook on landscaping when I started shagging golfballs And fell in love with grass and golf.Hoss my dad. had a ole baby blue chevy luv to god that was so small. We would load the old craftman mower into it and mow my family graves at the time. But you know what the ole craftsman mowers in the 70's werent all that bad or maybe I just remember it fondly

I learned to drive on a yellow '77 Ford Courier 4 speed. That thing was indestructable. I always think of Jim when I see a Camaro/Firebird with a mower. We've all come a long way Baby.
