Seems about right to me, if you gross lets say $100,000 a year, would you really spend $20,000 on advertisment?

Maybe $1000, but that's still a lot of flyers.

No if I gross 100k I wouldn't spend 20k on advertisement, but 5k? Absolutely!
Also a lot of companies on here or making 40k - 80k and $400 to $800 is not enough.
Take a look at this:
http://www.toolkit.com/small_business_guide/sbg.aspx?nid=P03_7006
Average for this industry is 4% according to that study.
Also note the part about being new and having to spend more. That is very true and a lot of companies on here are new.
I think the average on here should be the 5% to 9% category.

I was a little over 5% for 2009. My advertising expense is going up a lot this year, but hopefully if it is as effective as last year, will stay in a similar percentage of gross sales range.

We have one person who said they spend nothing on advertising. How exactly does that work? Maybe if you don't to grow I can understand.

I have spent close to nothing or nothing at all, it is called word of mouth. Oh, and I have grown every year also.

I understand word of mouth and how important it is but you need more than that if you want to take it to the next level. You need to be building your brand.

I typically run one 6 week ad in the spring for lawncare and one in the fall for cleanups and plowing. Total cost around $150. Plus a single line listing in the Yellow pages..I think that runs in the $300 ballpark. But my plate is usually pretty full and I'm just looking to get a few new customers to replace customers I've dropped or have moved. Most of my new accounts come from referrals or people who have seen my work and "flag me down". If I were trying to grow my business I'm sure I'd spend more on advertising.

That is just it, if you just want to maintain a presence and not really grow that is fine. But people who want to grow and are not spending at least 5% on advertising I just don't understand.

Less than 5% is holding right over 50%. I cringe every time I see a new vote for 0%.

No offense, but i cringe every time i see your posts...all that red and blue hurts my eyes. It's kind of overdone in my opinion.

No, I look away because like I said, it hurts my eyes. Kind of like how the louder my wife yells the less I hear, lol.

I'm just not a fan of bold in your face type advertising. I think it exudes arrogance. I'm a low key kind of guy. I prefer subtle.

What's the point of advertising here anyway, I think most of us are capable of mowing our own lawns. :p

Not trying to bash you but it really is a bit much imho.

Enough for me to make a living off of. Actually I have a full time job as a teacher, but I make about the same mowing as I do teaching and I am happy.

Last year it was zero.....this year looks like it may be zero too. The year before I spent around a hundred bucks on a few adds in the local paper. Unless you want me to lie and say 5%.....it is what it is. Yes I am a small operation of just ME, but I am happy and not hungry!

Actually last year I spent about 150$ on lettering for my pickup....so I lied! oops.

Don't want you to lie. That is fine if you are happy where you are. I am just saying if you want to grow at any rate other than a snails pace you need to advertise.

But at the same time I have always agreed with this:

"If you are not growing you are shrinking. A business is like a hot-air balloon: it is going up or it is going down. It is never standing still. The change in altitude may be slow, even imperceptible, but if the air in the balloon is not being heated up then it is cooling down. Cooling down is the natural tendency--you have to actively do something to keep heating up the air. If you do, the passengers are headed for the sky. If you don't, they are headed for the dirt."

Less than 5% has continuously held at about 50%
0% has grown to 11%!

I would love to know out of that 11% how many are start ups or Single Owner Operators that don't want more work.
Basically I want to know if there are LCO's out there that are Multi Crew, wanting to grow and still spend 0% on advertising.

Why are you sooooo interested? I bet the "Big LCO" group is thin around here.
