1985 John Deere rx75. A true BEAST! That 9hp Briggs would cut at AT LEAST 2.5mph! Only took me about 2 hours to cut 1/2 acre! lol.

I started with an ancient beast of a cub cadet rider with a 10 hp (i think) kohler motor and a mtd push mower in the back of a 1985 chevy 1/2 ton with a weed eater brand weed wacker... Upgraded after 3 weeks to a nice used snapper push mower! Those were the days....

Borrowing my parents 21 inch push mower, got trimmer for xmas, dads old chainsaw. Got all my climbing gear after doing two bigger jobs for a client. Im still using everything because i just started last summer but i plan on getting a 36 inch if i get more than 10 lawns this year. The push mower sips gas and i can run that thing for almost 2 hours. Sometimes i dont even bring a gas can if im only doing one lawn. If your starting out use a 21 inch junker and run with it. See where it take you and when your ready to go bigger then go bigger.

Push Toro - Curved shaft off brand weedeater - Broom - did all of that out of a 83 Dodge Ram Charger. I use to have bags of grass piled all the way to the ceiling, in the front seat and I would even dump in customers garbage cans if possible.

I started in elementary school with my parents 20" Craftsman, the type you wind to start. I took some of my earnings and bought a 5hp 25" cut Huffy rider with a 3 speed tranny. A few years later I moved up the biggest mower sears had at the time. It had 12 hp and a 48" mower, sealed beam headlights and tail light and a cigarette lighter. I think it was called a lawn tractor even though it was a Craftsman it lasted almost 20 years. They dont make them like that anymore.

Traded for a 2185 cub cadet tractor. After a couple of years I stepped up to a woods m2560 mow n machine. Ran that for 6 seasons and bought my first of two everride warriors.

I saved up $1500 bucks went to the local dealer (who I still work with today, 15 years now)
I paid$800 bucks for a brand new toro 21" self propelled BBC bad azz mower!!Man I was stoked, I also bought a stihl trimmer for $200 and a br 340 blower for $240 along with the hedger attachemnet. Printed out a 1000 flyerrs and landed 3 accounts out of the gate!! Within a couple of months i had 15 accounts and was off to the races! i paid $200 for my first walker zero turn mower, spent $150 getting the thing to start and about another 3k the next couple of months keeping it running.......sold it for 4k and bought a new one a year later.

Started with a mid 70's model kubota lawn tractor with a 4 ft finish mower craftsman push mower and a home lite weed eater had a 1983 Chevy half ton with a homemade tri axle trailer with some 2x12 ramps that would kick out as soon as you would get on trailer. Was always scared they would kick out early and end up under the tractor

Started out with a 21" MTD high wheeled with self propelled function disabled. I got it for free from my Ex girlfriend's parents (they bought it for $5 at a yard sale) because it didn't run. I put a brand new $30 carb on it, new spark plug, and changed the oil. Fired right up on the first or second pull from then on. Had a ryobi expand it straight shaft string trimmer, hedge trimmer, and edger. Also had a Homelite handheld blower. This was all stuff I was using on my personal yard.

3 years ago I bought a used 36" Snapper Pro gear drive walk behind for $1,000. That purchase really increased my profitability compared to a 21". I Still use it today, but I'm planning on buying a new one (36" Snapper pro hydro SW20 model) in the spring. For the first year, I used ramps and drove it up into the back of my truck. I bought a 5x8 trailer beginning last year.

Here's the current snapper
http://i1136.photobucket.com/albums/n489/brad_macgyver/2012-07-26191324.jpg

I'm only a part time operation and have been slowly expanding customers and equipment over the years. All of my equipment was bought with cash. I sold the MTD 21" last month to my old roomate for $20 since he just bought a house and was looking for a cheap push mower to mow his lawn. I sold the old Ryobi at a yard sale last weekend for $20 (Still ran fine). I picked up a 21" Snapper hi-vac the other day off a guy on craiglist just to have a 21"er in case I need it. I rarely, if ever use a 21. The 36 will go most places and whatever it doesn't get can be cut with a string trimmer.

i will never forget that day, I thought my wife was gonna actually kill me. She woke up and said "go get a nice mower mow a few yards with it so we don't have to push mow anymore". Went to John Deere shop as my buddy ran it and looked at the $2000 to $3000 mowers. When he asked me what I was gonna use it for he said "You will tear these up quick, you need this one". 757 for like $8000. I see everyone here using Grasshopper so I told him for that much I will just get what the guys use. I went to the Hopper place and asked for the nicest mower they had, it was put on my trailer and I came home with a payment...1.9%. My wife said "Why did you buy a $6000 mower?", I laughed and told her a little more than double, for a split moment I think I saw actual fire blazing from her eyeballs...lol, mower was more than the truck I was driving..lol. First job $700 a week, gravy from there.... no more pushing.

I'm new to the business, starting out this year in my neighborhood with:

1990 Toro 26624 21'' Walk-Behind Mower (Suzuki Engine, always starts on first pull)
Mid-2000s Snapper Walk-Behind Mower (5 HP Honda GXV-160)
2012 Echo PB-250
2012 Stihl FS-90R

I hope to either get my brother's old Scag SW that he doesn't use anymore since he stopped cutting grass or the old Snapper RER 33'' that we cut Dad's acreage at his office with - I would love either one.

Craftsman 6.5hp 21 inch model #917.377070

This was about 13 years ago and my parents bought it for our domain.

I still own it and cut my yard with yard. I have always hated Sears and everything about Sears, but my Dad thought they were always 'top end' in appliances. He doesn't think that anymore.

I still use the mower to cut the yard. Anything over 4 days growth (fert and irrigation) and it just doesn't have the power. It will keep cutting off.

I need to replace the grassbag and it has several 1 inch tears. Does anyone know of a good patch or have a repair process. Not really looking to spend 8- bucks for a grassbag on a mower that likely will not last much longer

Just picked up 2 old sensation decks. Simplest toughest machine ever. During the 70's we used these + international cub cadet for larger areas.

Was wondering if flip handle design is a liability issue today. Knew a guy that chopped his foot.

JD 170 42" and a Sears 20" push.

JD bought 2003. Sears at least that old.

Used on own property, now using them for third year for business.
Hope to add a 36" WB this season. May up grade the JD to a to 48" deck. Cheaper to do that because a 48" ZTR will most likely have to wait till next year. Then I'll keep the JD as a back up.

Started in 2003 with a 3.5 HP 21" pushmower from Lowe's, weed eater bent shaft trimmer and a cheap blower on the back of my F-150. Mowed rental properties (three) of a friend of mine. I do this only part time but since then have built through word of mouth and customer referrals.

Now have 20 regular clients and have been expanding my landscaping services. Still have the F-150 towing my trailer and my JD zero turn. Husqvarna straight shaft trimmers, echo back pack blower. When I retire from my regular job in 10 years, plan to do this full-time simply because I love working outside and the smell of freshly cut grass. Wierd, I know, but hey that's me!
