I recently meet with a customer who has a brick wall that they would like to change to cut bluestone. Can you mortar directly over that or should i just start from scratch?????

you can attach to the exisiting brick but you would have to use galvanised metal lath attached with masonary nails. This is the same stuff we use for cultured stone. After you use the lath this gives the mortar something to grip to. The lath is pretty easy to work with and can be cut using just tin snips but sometimes you can run into problems with hammering in the masonary nails depending on the materials and process in which the bricks were made. I would have no problem doing the job but just make sure the existing brick are structurely sound and you dont have alot of mortar cracking or missing
