View Full Version : Cut height?

What is the recommended cut height for lawns in the northeast (NY)?
I have a new Toro Z-Master 150, mowing time and mowing frequency is definitely no longer an issue.

What type of grass are you growing? It depends on time of the season and grass type. Typical heights in inches.
Creeping Bentgrass 0.1 - 0.5
Fine Fescue 1.5 - 3.0
Kentucky Bluegrass 1.5 - 3.0
Perennial Ryegrass 1.5 - 3.0
Tall Fescue 1.5 - 3.5
In the cooler months the lower value is OK. As it heats up and drys out you are always better off mowing at the higher value. Remember that root length is directly affected by shoot length. As a general rule the healthier grass will have deeper roots and, therefore, longer shoot lengths. Good luck. I hope this helps out.

The taller the grass is cut the better. Cutting the grass at 2.5 to 3.5 is a good range. This allows the roots to grow depper which helps the grass do better during drought and resist fungus and other problems, also helps with weed control by shading weeds so they do not get as much sun and they do not grow. If you cut too short this will cause the stem to grow faster which means mowing again sooner, plus more weeds and the roots will not grow deeper. Hope this helps you out.
