we're required to put license numbers on all legal docs, bids, cards ect.

has anyone had someone acquire your number and use it without your knowledge? 2 years ago it happened to me.

It isn't like your number is a secret, or is it?

I've never had it happen but I can see where it could be a problem. Mr. Trunkslammer copies your number and uses it for his benefit. What is the penalty is caught by the authorities? A slap of the wrist?

There are probably state laws against false representation. Now try to get your local DA interested in prosecuting.

no it's not, but after this incident i just don't throw them out on every counter like i used to.

the problem was resolved at the permit counter.

I got turned in last year by another licensed contractor for not having my number on one of my trucks. I definitely complicated things when the other contractor asked me my number and I told him to take a flying leap.

in the state of california, i believe that only plumbers and well drillers are required to have their company name on the trucks, although if you put your name on the truck, your lic. no. has to be on it.

argos, isn't it kinda short sided for a guy to turn you in for something that unimportant

I didn't handle the situation diplomatically. I was doing an install. Landscape contractor approaches me asking about my license (in CA landscape contractor and irrigation contractor are the same license). I wasn't in the mood and told him to take a hike. He goes to the his computer and looks up my company name, sees that I am licensed, and calls the Contractors State Licensing Board and tells them I don't have my number on my truck. Sour grapes I guess. I get a call from the board just making sure that I have my number on all my trucks and if I don't I need to get them on there.

I prefer to handle things diplomatically and professionally. I regret that I lost my cool in this situation and wish I had just shown him my card.

1idejim,
We are also required to have our license number on all legal docs, cards, invoices, etc. But we have to show our irrigation license and our driver's license when we register in each city. So if someone was to use my number, they could show it to a customer and maybe install a system illegally. But they wouldn't be able to register and put a job in legally. Some cities use a pin number, so even if I was already registered, they couldn't pull a permit without my pin. All depends on what city you're working with, around here.
I looked up a couple of fines assessed from the state and it's about $1000 if you get caught working without a license.

I am a firm believer that your vehicles are your best advertising so I always have mine lettered. But I didn't realize that all commercially licensed vehicles owned by the contractor has to be lettered with the name of the company and license number. I was surprised that the lettering only has to be 3/4" tall. A little on the small side.

I also didn't know that I have to have my license number on any clothing or giveaways. I don't have our number on any of our uniforms. Didn't realize that one.

We're supposed to place it on anything we put our name on. That said, I've never seen it on any shirts, caps, etc.
