Kawasaki Exhaust fumes

Just got a one year old Exmark Metro HP with a 17 hp Kawasaki engine, the engine has a strong exhaust smell when running. Other than the fumes and a occasional puff of black smoke the engine appears to run fine. Any suggestions, carb adjustment? Thanks

the black smoke means it's running rich. see if the choke is partially on. if ok then rebuild the carb.
