we do mostly landscaping construction and irrigation. we are looking to expand into mowing, we have a chance to bid on 15 acres of mowing it has a alot of trimming in and out of trees and alot of fence, not the best of grass just crab grass and we dont have to bag it. we bid it at 750 a mow or about 3000 a month. is that a fair price.

Well, that's a good rate to get for that. Around here you would be really high. You are around $50/acre. Wide open jobs around here are often less than $20/acre. So, with a lot of trimming to do and putsy work, it seems like most would bid around $30-40/acre around here. Probably less than $30 knowing my market. Now, this is just for my area, which is pretty cheap. I think you bid that job maybe a tad high, but you will get compensated well for doing a good job.

i thought the bidding was low here...$20 an acre? if i found out a guy that bid against me bid $20 an acre i'd punch him square in the eye for being an absolute ******bag lowballer...wow $20....that sucks


but $50 an acre is what i charge so you bid it fair...you'll probably get lowballed though by some schmuck with one mower

We're about $20 / acre, +/- with 5 guys. 2 guys trimming, 1 72" mower, 1 60" mower and 1 15' trideck behind a 60 hp Kubota.

50 acres, about 5 hours.

Last year a job I bid on had about 6 guys that bid less than $20/acre. I was at $22/acre. And of course the lowest bidder won, as it's a municipal job. I personally like doing resi's better if that's the rate for wide open jobs.

so if you are doing 20 an acre what do you do a normal house lot for. our lots here are about 60 x 120

About $75-80.

I can't bid by the square foot or price.

I'm geared to do wide open spaces fast. I'm not geared to do a 60'x120' property with a 15' trideck, 1 72" mower and 2 60" mowers.

I'm like Wal-Mart, volume driven.

I have my fair share of smaller commercial properties too, which I TRY to charge $75-100 / hour for.

A residential of that size I would charge a minimum of $250 / month for, obviously more if there were alot of obstacles, fencing, pool, landscaping, etc.

I know alot of guys say they won't do anything for less than $xx / acre.

That's fine. Where I'm at, we don't have alot of real close neighborhoods where you can get 3-5-8 houses together for $40 / pop. We're spread out about 30-40 miles outside of St. Paul / Minneapolis.

The drive time will kill you around here, especially if you have guys in the trucks.

You either need to be solo, or set it up where you're not moving too much during the day.

If you were to try to get $50 / acre at 50 acres, that would be $2500 / mow or about $60k for the season. The last time this property was bid out, it was 3 guys at $35k, 1 guy at $38k, 1 guy at $42k and 1 guy at $109k.

Can you guess which guy was trying to get $xx per sq.ft.?

We trim every other - every 3rd week. On larger properties like this, the 50' rule comes into play. Usually as long as it looks good from 50', you're good to go.

You don't have to worry about some guy that hates his job coming home just to bi*** and moan about how much he's paying for his grass to be cut.

that makes since like i said we are just starting when we first started the business we didnt do mowing because we didnt have money to get the equipment we spent it on a truck, skid steer, curbing machine, dump truck, but now thats almost paid for and in good shape we saw this job and thought if we could get it for 3000 a month that would cover the cost of the mowers and still give us a good income. we are looking at getting 2 walker mowers because it is the nearest dealer and i hear they are good mowers, but what would you suggest for trimmers and blowers. the walker dealer also has stihl products but they expensive, does it matter about buying them close.

the price is set by the stihl company themselves stihl handhelds are the same price everywhere no matter what unless there is a sale going on (thats what i was told by a stihl dealer around here)

that sucks brother...some other guy on here told me some companies in his are were bidding $11.00 acre...that's great money...if it were 1952:laugh:
