I want to start fertilizing this year. Im only going to do a couple lawns just to get my feet wet before offering the service. What kind of fertilizer should i use? On my parents lawn they have a lot of weeds mixed in and the grass isn't very dense in areas but in some areas it looks great. What kind of fertilizer should i use to help the grass become stronger and kill some of those weeds?

No offense but you don't have the knowledge or skills to do this for pay any time soon. Read some books, ask more questions, and learn what turf grass is, what it needs and why.
It's not just weed and feed and or fert and squirt.
Besides that it won't be profitable for you. Stick to your core business whatever that may be, the one you do know until you can tell ME what fertilizer to use and why.

My recommendation would be to first look at your local extension office's website, there is often really valuable information for YOUR area. Next call the agricultural department and find out what you can legally apply. In some areas of the country you can get away with applying fertilizer to a lawn however if the fertilizer has any type of weed control it would require you to get an applicators license. So check beforehand so you don't get in trouble. Another great resource would be to talk to a local store and ask them a bunch of questions. These are the places I would start out, the thing about fertilizer is that it varies on soil conditions, grass types, water availability, and other conditions. Their isn't a one fix all product as many tout. But with a little knowledge from your area you will be able to come up with a good mix of the right nutrients for your turf.

You need a few soil tests. Determine what it needs first. The main problem will be weeds--both grassy and broadleaf. For weeds, you need a license to apply weed and feed or to spray--except on your own property. Get the study materials for Illinois--fast and study hard--season starts soon. You need a pesticide business license. You will also need liability insurance to apply chemicals except on your own property.
