I would take Stihl just because I am more accustomed to them. Echo's seem to be a fine brand too and many guys down here have good luck with them.

I don't have experience with the 280, but I have a 261t that I love. It has a ton of power and has been extremely durable.

How much of that power is contributed by the model's gear reduction is what I'm wondering...

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. I had a Kawasaki trimmer of comparable specs that would not hold a candle to the Echo in the heavy stuff.

I prefer the Echo, I have ran a 280, 265, and 265t, They are very powerful, I would never buy anything else.

Hold on a second!! How does the regular 265 compare to the T model???
The T model turns slower doesn't it?

The 265T does turn slower. The 265 has plenty enough power, however the "T" has even more due to the slower head speed, with slowing the speed of the head it gives a little more torque to the head. The "T" in my opinion actually works better because if you catch the line on anything it doesn't tend to pull the head towards the object quite as bad. There is really no reason to turn the head at engine speed, I believe you will see more and more reduction gear boxes from all the brands, shindaiwa and red max both offer a higher torque model as well and I am sure there are other brands too. I use ECHO PAS-265's and for quite some time all you could get for a trimmer attacthment was the standard one which it's all I have at the moment, I would prefer the "T" for the only reason of a slower spinning head, but there isn't a lot of power difference. any of the 265's are screamers.

They are both great brands but I prefer the ECHO. My echo dealer is awsome and that helps out too.

I agree with the statement about dealer support. People will argue all day long about which brand is better. For the most part, if you stay with the big names, ie. Echo, Stihl, Husqvarna, etc., you will get a quality product. The dealer makes all the difference in the world. I used to favor Husqvarna products. Then my dealer started charging full retail for everything. They are nice folks, but they would never give you a break on price on anything. That is when I changed to Echo. I am still partial to Husqvarna chainsaws, but will continue to purchase Echo when I can, unless I get a good deal on some used Equipment.

Echo all the way here baby, as far as small handhelds and other small 2-cycle equipment is concerned. I've owned everything from Poulan, Redmax, Stihl, John Deere, Craftsman, Weed-Eater, Shindaiwa(sp?), and some others.I've had good and bad accross all brands, but I believe Echo products are simply the most efficient reliable small power equipment available. My first Echo was a PB-265 Backpack blower the cheapest one I coulds find and that little thing amazed me for being as light as it is its wicked powerful and efficient. Second Echo was a 225 straight shaft trimmer and that thing hooked me on all Echo products. That little thing goes through grass(wet, tall, thick, tough) like a starved alligator. It blew my mind. I'm starting to convert all my smaller equipment (blowers, chainsaws, trimmers, etc) to strictly Echo. For the money I don't think they can be beaten IMO.

Any ECHO will outrun any Stihl. Plus they are better balanced.

I prefer Echo and I have two SRM 230. These were purchased at the box store and my John Deere dealer carry them also (same prices). The good thing is if you need filters, plugs, head assemblies or trimmer line the orange box stores (that are all over the place) have every thing on hand. I keep three (3) line spools with me to keep from restringing while working through out the day. I have work several overgrown jobs that has given me confidence in the Echo brand and the SRM 230s are not the top of the line from Echo, however they are what I would purchase again. The one piece is going through it's second season including a few spring and fall cleanups. I also use the Echo backpack blowers too. Okay...okay I like Echo!

stihl no doubt about it. wayyy better throttle response and more powerful. the new 4mix stihls are great. wont bog out on u while in thick heavy grass/weeds/and brush. way better at verticle edging too. IMO. and im not comparing my fs90r to my back up junky 225sR or whatever. im talking about the 265. Stihls 28cc trimmer beats the hell outta echos 28cc. why do u think eccho doesnt display the power output of there trimmers?? cuz there embarrased. the 265 may be lighter, but fs90l just feels more heavy duty and doesnt take 30 seconds to warm up to get perfect throttle response at low/high rpms. My eccho is a good backup trimmer, i give it that, but i would never buy one of ecchos higher end trimmers and thats why i bought the 225SR cuz it was probably the better trimmer of its price range. but if u are gonna spend over 300 on a trimmer....go stihl

I am not going to suggest one over another....but i switched from echo to stihl and was amazed at the difference. I will say this i don't miss having to stop and untangle grass etc.. from around the head. Stihl is by far superior in tall grass and vines.

Echo. It's what my preferred dealer carries. I believe in buying the dealer rather than a particular brand.
