I am looking at new 36" hydro mower. The new ones are so expensive. I could get a 48" for like $200 more than the 36" Which led me to thinking could I just get a used scag hydro walk behind and put a new 36" deck on it? Has any one tried this or know if it works? If the frame and the wheel base is the same for all the different deck options it should work right.

ok, try again.

1. Do you have an old scag you could possibly convert?
2. Are you trying to get a 36" or 48" mower?
3. Have you looked at the frames of the older mowers vs new ones to compare wheelbase, how decks bolts on, how belts are routed, etc?

seems like unless you are stellar at fabricating this is a bad idea. Especially if you don't have one to modify...

Custom is that.....Custom. weld on some plates and mount it. But why spend the money for a new deck and put it on an old motor. There is nothing wrong with the old Scag decks.

Why not just buy a used newer 36" ? I have seen them on claiglook.com for less then 2 grand. Go check it out before you hack away at a mower.
