View Full Version : Woods BH90-X backhoe, worth the price?

I am considering putting a Woods BH90-X Backhoe on my smaller tractor, a L3240HSTC this season. The reason I am considering this is because I will sometimes have a use for a backhoe/mini excavator and will either turn down the job, rent one, or just do it by hand.

My concern is though, will the backhoe be able to handle digging out average size stumps, walkways, smaller retaining walls, etc. Also, from anyone who has or know someone who has this backhoe, how is the durability of it? Any problems with bending frames on tractors even with a 4pt subframe mount? I cannot find to many "reviews" of the X series backhoes online. I imagine it will be able to handle all this stuff pretty well for its size, but I just got to ask before I go down and drop $8,399. on a backhoe.

I would not go that route. Use that money for a mini excavator, downpayment on new or look for a used kubota or yanmar. Watch the used equipment @ www. unionfarmequipment.com great people to do business with.

Woods makes excellent backhoes, in most cases better than factory (offering hydraulic thumbs). I havent heard a negative about them, and again many choose them over factory kubota hoes....they spec out higher most times as well. Just check that its not too much hoe for that machine...

I hear the other suggestions but unless going used (not a bad idea), mini-ex are top dollars....its a dollar and cents decision.....if your use will be heavy and frequent, then maybe the mini ex would be better....

The pump on ur L34 ain't strong enough for a backhoe attach. Buy a used mini-Ex.

My M59 had a tough time with this stump. It was a maple tree with super large root system. The root ball weighed 3000lbs :canadaflag:

My use isn't nearly enough to warrant a mini ex. And I'm really not into buying used equipment unless its pretty much almost new, which the prices are usually so high, I might as well buy new. The dealer is pretty insistent that the machine could handle the BH90. I have a use for one, but even at 8K I'm debating if the purchase is worth it. So thats why I consider a mini ex out of the question. Although, I have used both backhoes and mini's and the minis are the deal. They work awesome if sized properly.

I have a BH70X on my Kioti CK20. It specs out better than comparable size Kioti or Kubota backhoes and has held up very well. With the beefy subframe it has I can't imagine it hurting the tractor. The subframe however does reduce ground clearance in the rear somewhat, and makes it hard to remove the 3-pt lift arms. It was considerably more expensive (over $1000) than the Kioti backhoe but the extra reach, digging power and thumb are worth it. The BH90X as you know has a factory hydraulic thumb option which I really wish the BH70X had.

Theres your answer - the woods is a nicer BH than the Kubota BH90, specs out better and has the thumb offering, and curved boom...

that should be enough to sell anybody...

If you dont use it all that much, just use a mini rental.

I would say most machines even TLB would have a rough go at first, tackling it head on, expecting it to come out in a few scoops. Its all about the approach - first suggestion is using a smaller bucket on that machine, to cut the roots with much less stress on the machine. Cut around the tree ball and work your way in, and after a while you can wiggle the stump free.

You M59 is a brute but I have done larger with my L39 and much smaller 2520.It takes time, and brute force isnt the best method......using 12" buckets is really the right bucket to use in these stumps - less stress on the machine, and the ripping power is concentrated.

Its just takes practice - think of it this way, back in the day it used to be done by hand- LOL

How did you haul the stump outta there?

"Tough time" is a relative term, and it realy comes down to technique - I have had smaller tractors dig out larger stumps (see pictures), having a "tough time" being relative - most machines M59 size or even full TLBs could have issues when attacking it head on and trying to muscle it from the start....working from the outside in, breaking the roots as you go makes the machines life easier...
