View Full Version : K5 Blazer engine options???

I recently got an 87' k5 for $400 Its got the big mud tires and all that, straight mud truck that goes on a trailer.

It needs a new engine. I was thinking a 383 stroker motor but my friend said go with the 434. I could drop another 350 in there but I want more power!!!!!!

What do ya'll think? 1 ton running gear is also in the works too.

go with a 454 out of an old mid 70-80s truck! tons of torque!!!!

Since it's a mud toy and not a trailer puller, I'd go for a built small block that will rev up high and spin those mudders fast! The 383 stroker would be a good way to go. If you have lots of money to spend swap in a modded and chipped 6.0 Vortec out of a newer truck.

Trying to find a 350 with a 4 bolt main might be hard to find the hot rod guys are buying them up.

if your going to build it anyways might as well go with aftermarket 4 bolt splayed caps.

I'am not a GM man so I don't follow the new things to build a hot rod engine.

4bolt mains are pretty common down here, course so are old Chevys. :cool2:


I'd personally go for a real torquey(sp?) motor. The 454 is my personal favorite, but the 383 is great motor to.

The 400 small block(6.0) is an AWESOME MOTOR, will flat out get up and go with great torque imo. But be ready to drop some change on just a motor.

The 350 chevy engines don't last long in junk yards they are bought up by the hot rod crowd. Even engine rebuilders have troubles getting 350 engines for rebuildable cores.

For a K5 Blazer a 383 would be good power and as I said you would keep the stock rad etc. If you wanted a power engine buy a 502 crate engine drop it in :laugh:

Go with the 383. The 434 would be very expensive. You can build a 6" rod 383 for relatively cheap. No need for splayedcaps unless over 500hp. A set of Dart heads or a set of Vortec heads. Both would make good power. Get it balanced and turn it 7000rpms. Anyways, wheres the pics.

go with a 454 , i had one in my 80Z28 i had , was bored .60 over hada solid lifter comp cam in it , and a few other little things ....made a little over 425hp at the wheels i forgot what the tq was ......its a K5 blazer you got loads of room under the hood go for the big block, u want tq in the mud and u can get the revs if you balance it .........i turned mine up to 7200 when at the track , i was right on the rev limiter as i went though the traps

I'm staying away from any and all electronic motors. I don't wanna spend $$$ when I sink it in water over the hood.

Big blocks are out, I want a 5k motor!

Found a few 350's 355's and a 383 all around 800-1500 on good ol craigslist.

I'll keep ya posted and post some pics
