Is it possible to remove the axel shafts to get to the brakes without removing c-clips in the differential? I have a 1987 C-20 chevy suburban(3/4 ton, 13" drum). I would like to know if how to get the drums off w/o having to break the diff. cover(if possible). Does the shaft just come out? It fees like there is something holding it in there. I would appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks.

Brake drums come off without removing the axle anyhow,, if they are stuck it may be hard to remove them but they are seperate parts. Other than that, no way to remove the shaft without removing the C clips. No big deal to get them out though. Pull the cover, remove the retaining pin and center pin in the diff, push the axle in, let the clip fall off and pull the shaft out.<br><p><font size="1">Edited by: Alan

Yep, that's a semifloating axel, so you shouldn't have to take it out to get the brake drum off. Make sure the brake isn't set, that can make it kinda a b-tch. Use bigger hammer as needed.

If it has C-clips it is not a full floater. Full floater has 8 bolt wheels and six (I think) cap screws that hold the axle to the hud/drum assembly. You remove those by pulling the axle first, then the spindle nuts and bearings.

I seen an 83 sub last year with no hub cap and the I could see the big hub of a full-floating axle in the center-I thought that most 2500 8600 Gvwr 's had full-floating rears,I guess this one is semi-floating.<p>----------<br>John D<br>

The 8600 lb rigs do run floaters, but the LD version, 6 bolt wheels run a semifloater. At least from 81 on that has been the way.

Some 3/4 tons have full-floaters on.<br>If I happened to have a truck with a semi-floater, I'd swap it out for the FF in a heartbeat instead of messing with c-clips. They're super cheap and most of them that I've seen are 3.73, which is also what most of the chevy front axles I've counted teeth on had.<br>
