This is what our dealer "Pacific Lawnmower Works" and us have come up with to improve the mulching plates for the 72" Scag mowing decks.

Inside view shows that the bottom of the plate has been trimmed to remove lip. At the front it is trimmed at the point where it start to angle back and at the point where it matches up with the deck on the rear. This removes about 3/4" in the front and about 1/4" in the rear.

Bottom view shows the reinforcing plate.

Side front view show the three mounting tabs. The two tabs on top mount to the outside of the deck, while the front tab mounts inside.

Material used is 3/16" plate steel and 3/16" X 1 1/2" angle iron. We are bolting these on for now and if they work out will be welded into place.

Are these for the advantage deck or the older decks? I run with the discharge off like most, but would like to have a guard.

This should be for the advantage decks, our machines are only about 1 year old.

How did this improve mulching plate?

Our problem was that the plate would dig into the ground since it extend below the edge of the deck and then would curl in causing the blade to hit the lip of the plate. After many repairs(banging plate out) we started having spindle failures on that spindle(cracked housings). Also our operator do try and trim with that side out of neccisity and that compounded the problem.
Now the operators are happy and we have no more problems with spindle failures, the blade hitting the plate or the plate trying to curl under the deck.
